Ampreg 21 - Epoxy Wet Laminating System (v7)

Product catalog summary
Introduction
Ampreg 21 is an epoxy wet laminating system optimized for large composite structures using hand lay-up and vacuum bagging techniques. It features low initial mixed viscosity, good health and safety properties, and is approved by Germanischer Lloyd. The system offers a range of hardener speeds from Fast to Extra Slow.

Specifications
The system is designed for use between 18-25°C, with a maximum relative humidity of 70%. It provides excellent mechanical and thermal properties from ambient temperature cures and moderate temperature post-cures (50°C).

Instructions for Use
Workshop Conditions: Optimal use is between 18-25°C. At lower temperatures, the product thickens, and at higher temperatures, working times are reduced.
Mixing and Handling: Accurate measurement and thorough mixing of resin and hardener are crucial. Use electronic scales for measurement and mix thoroughly, especially at the sides and bottom of the vessel.
Mould Release: Use carnauba-based wax for smooth surfaces and PVA for complex surfaces. Test laminate is recommended to ensure effective part release.
Application: Apply using a foam roller. For thick laminates, use slower hardeners initially and faster ones later.
Bonding Techniques & Peel Ply: Use nylon peel ply for secondary bonding applications to prevent contamination and provide a textured surface.
Vacuum Bag Techniques: Apply vacuum 50% into the working time to avoid excessive resin flow.
Core Materials: Suitable core materials include Corecell™ SAN foam, PVC foam, Nomex honeycomb, and end grain balsa.

Curing Schedule
Ambient Temperature Cure: Minimum recommended cure temperature is 18°C. Initial cure of 48 hours (slow hardener) or 16 hours (fast hardener) is recommended.
Elevated Temperature Cure: Post-curing at 70-80°C for 5 hours or 50°C for 16 hours enhances properties. Use a ramp rate of 10°C/hour.

Component Properties
Viscosity varies with temperature and hardener type. Shelf life is 24 months for both resin and hardeners.

Health and Safety
Avoid skin contact by wearing protective gloves and clothing. Ensure adequate ventilation and avoid inhaling vapors. Use resin-removing cleansers for skin contamination.

Transport & Storage
Store in a warm, dry place between 10-25°C. Avoid temperature fluctuations to prevent crystallization. Keep containers closed to prevent degradation.

Ampreg 21 - Epoxy Wet Laminating System (v7)-1

Epoxy Wet Laminating System ■ Low initial mixed viscosity ■ Good cure progression from ambient only cures ■ Non Pigmented Resin and Hardeners ■ Improved Health and Safety ■ Optimised for Hand Lay-Up ■ Excellent Fibre Wetting ■ Germanischer Lloyd approved Ampreg 21 has been optimised for the manufacture of large composite structures using hand layup, and vacuum bagging techniques. The relatively low initial mixed viscosity of Ampreg 21 allows easy wetout of heavyweight reinforcements. It has been formulated to give a good Health and Safety product Ampreg 21 has been designed to give excellent mechanical and thermal properties from both ambient temperature cures, and moderate temperature postcures (50°C) This system is available with a range of hardener speeds, from Fast to Extra Slow.

Workshop Conditions Ampreg 21 is optimised for use between 18 - 25°C. At lower temperatures the product thickens and may become unworkable. At higher temperatures working times will be significantly reduced. Maximum relative humidity for use is 70%. Ampreg 21 should be mixed at the following ratios: It is important that the resin and hardener components are measured out accurately. Measurement by weight and electronic scales are recommended for this purpose. The two components must be mixed thoroughly. If mixing by hand particular attention should be paid to the side and bottom of the mixing...

Curing Schedule Ambient Temperature Cure The system has been developed to provide good mechanica properties after an ambient only cure. The minimum recommended cure temperature is 18°C. Excellent mechanical/thermal properties can be achieved after a slightly elevated temperature post-cure. An initial cure of at least 48 hours (with slow hardener) or 16 hours (with fast hardener) at 18°C is recommended before demoulding When using the Slow, Extra Slow or High Tg Hardeners exclusively, an elevated temperature postcure is strongly Elevated Temperature Cure Post curing the laminate will greatly increase...

After more extensive sanding operations a shower/bath and hair wash is The following points must be considered 1. Skin contact must be avoided by wearing protective gloves. Gurit recommends the use of disposable nitrile gloves for most applications. The use of barrier creams is not recommended, but to preserve skin condition a moisturising cream should be used after washing Gurit produces a separate full Material Safety Data Sheet for all hazardous products. Transport & Storage The resin and hardeners should be kept in securely closed containers during transport and storage. Any accidental spillage should be soaked up with sand, sawdust, cotton waste or any other absorbent material. The area should then be washed clean (see appropriate Safety Data Sheet). Adequate long term storage conditions will result in a shelf life of two years for both the resin and hardeners. Storage should be in a warm dry place out of direct sunlight and protected from frost. The storage temperature should be kept constant between 10°C and 25°C, cyclic fluctuations in temperature...
