Project Overview
The project aimed to enhance passenger processing efficiency at Bristol Airport by implementing pre-security gates. This initiative was a collaboration between Bristol Airport, South-West Airports Ltd, ICTS Europe, and Gunnebo UK. The primary goal was to reduce processing times, minimize passenger stress, and increase time spent in duty-free areas, which are significant revenue sources for airports.
Background
Bristol Airport, with a single terminal serving 4.6 million passengers annually, sought an innovative solution to manage passenger flow into security control. The project required a security gate that could integrate with a queuing system to optimize logistics and facility placement.
Challenge
Gunnebo UK identified a business opportunity to collaborate with ICTS Europe, a leading aviation security provider, to develop a pre-security gate solution. Extensive testing was conducted to ensure the compatibility of Gunnebo's Speed Gate with ICTS's Smart Queue product, convincing Bristol Airport of its superiority over competitors.
Solution
Gunnebo UK and ICTS Europe implemented nine lanes of high-security Speed Gates integrated with the SmartQ Queue Management System. This system validates boarding passes, cross-references flight information, checks traveler profiles, and monitors security process times, providing real-time statistics.
Results
Passengers now scan their boarding cards in the SmartQ system, which logs arrival times, validates passes, and directs them to specific lanes. This system offers a comprehensive view of terminal operations, enabling real-time monitoring and efficient personnel deployment. Chris Ware, Head of Security at Bristol Airport, noted the system's transformative impact on passenger management. Tim Ward of Gunnebo UK highlighted its alignment with IATA's 'Check Point of The Future' vision.
Conclusion
Gunnebo has maintained its position as the global leader in Pedestrian Entrance Control Equipment for five consecutive years, as per IMS Research.

Gunnebo – Airport Installation Case Study Gunnebo and ICTS Europe improve passenger processing to airside lounges with pre-security gates at Bristol Airport Project: The Background The objective for this project at Bristol Airport was to decrease the processing times to get the passengers into the airside lounges, whilst preventing passenger stress and allowing passengers more time in duty free. Rationale – airports are fined if the processing is too long and the duty free is a big additional revenue stream for the airports! It was also important to be able to measure passenger queuing times at airports and to record their patterns of movement in order to establish efficient logistics. The information is also necessary to optimise the location of different service facilities and exits at the airport. Bristol Airport wanted an innovative, efficient solution for controlling the flow of passengers into security control. In order to provide such a solution, it was necessary to have a security gate that could interface with an innovative queuing system. Prior to order placement, Gunnebo provided a demonstration Speed Gate unit to ICTS in order to test the interface between the Speed Gate and ICTS‟s Smart Queue Product. Extensive testing took place over many months to prove reliability prior to fully marketing the combined solution to airport customers.
