Product catalog summary
Introduction
The GRUNDFOS UPM3 series includes models like UPM3, UPM3 HYBRID, and UPM3 AUTO, designed for heating, cooling, and domestic hot water systems. These pumps offer PWM and HYBRID variants for internal and external control.
Features and Benefits
The UPM3 series features high-efficiency, speed-controlled circulators with electronically commutated motors (ECM). They can be controlled via digital PWM signals or internally in constant pressure, proportional pressure, or constant speed modes, making them suitable for integration into boilers and heating appliances.
Applications
UPM3 circulators are used in geothermal and solar thermal systems, district heating, and domestic hot water systems, maintaining optimal flow and temperature conditions.
Technical Description
Details on material specifications, component descriptions, and installation guidelines are provided, including exploded and sectional views for better understanding.
Installation and Startup
Guidelines for mechanical and electrical installation and startup procedures ensure proper pump operation.
Fault Finding and Disposal
Troubleshooting tips for common issues and instructions for proper pump disposal are included.
Performance and Technical Data
Performance curves and technical data sheets help users select the appropriate pump model based on specific requirements.
Approvals and Certificates
The UPM3 series complies with various standards and regulations, including EC declaration of conformity and drinking water approvals.
Specifications and Features
Over 1,000,000 UPM units have been installed since 2006. These circulators are compact, cost-optimized, and energy-efficient, using less electrical power compared to conventional circulators.
Unique Selling Points
UPM3 is the first high-efficiency circulator with a front terminal box and a mechanical de-blocking device, operating in high ambient and media temperatures up to 70°C/110°C.
Ecodesign Regulation
The EU's Ecodesign regulation mandates specific energy efficiency standards, with UPM3 circulators being "ErP-ready" and compliant with 2015 requirements.
Control and Signals
UPM3 circulators are controlled via a digital low-voltage PWM signal, ensuring user safety by preventing contact with dangerous voltage.
Performance and Variants
Detailed performance ranges and specifications for various UPM3 models are provided, with information on external control modes and signal profiles for heating and solar applications.
Specifications and Design Recommendations
Optimal design of connections for composite materials is discussed, recommending clip or hair-pin designs due to low internal stress. EPDM gaskets are recommended, and composite threads are not advised for standalone connections outside appliances.
Material and Lifetime Expectations
PA 6.6 housings are defined as integrated, with pump heads tested according to EN 16297/3. The expected lifetime is influenced by liquid temperature and system pressure.
Installation Guidelines
Detailed installation instructions emphasize mounting the circulator with a horizontal motor shaft within ± 5 ° and avoiding air accumulation in the pump housing.
Electrical Installation
Electrical connections must comply with local regulations, with no external motor protection required. The supply voltage should be 1 x 230 V + 10 %/- 15 %, 50 Hz.
Control Box and Connections
The control box can be repositioned in 90-degree increments, with TE Superseal connectors used for reliability and safety.
Environmental and Operational Conditions
The ambient temperature should not exceed 70 °C, and the relative air humidity must not exceed 95 % in a non-condensing environment.
Technical Specifications
Detailed specifications for various pump models, including UPM3(K) AUTO, HYBRID, DHW, and SOLAR series, are provided, with key parameters like dimensions, connection types, and weights.
Performance and Efficiency
The pumps are high efficiency and ready for Ecodesign 2015, with an Energy Efficiency Index (EEI) of ≤ 0.20.
Operational Conditions
The pumps can handle liquid temperatures ranging from +2 °C to +110 °C, with a minimum inlet pressure requirement of 0.05 MPa at 95 °C.
Approval and Marking
The pumps have VDE and CE approvals, with additional drinking water approvals for certain models.
Graphical Data
Performance curves and electrical data illustrate the relationship between flow rate, head, and power consumption, aiding in understanding operational efficiency.

Applications In a modern heating, cooling and domestic hot water supply system there are different circuits in which UPM3 circulator pumps in different versions can be placed. A differentiation must be made between the heating (or cooling) production and the distribution. On the production side there are some applications where circulator pumps are used in primary or internal circuits e.g. for geothermal or solar thermal brine circuits. The distribution side is often split into two circuits - a primary and a secondary circuit - in order to keep the flow and temperature independent from each other....

Gas or oil-fired space and combination heaters Most of the installed systems for space and water heating in building services are still using fossil fuels such as natural gas or mineral oil, although the use of gas and liquid fuels out of biomass is increasing. Heaters with higher water content, such as floorstanding boilers, are heated independent of the actual flow. Heaters as wall-mounted boilers are only fired when there is a minimum flow through the primary heat exchanger. In a combi-boiler, the circulator pump supplies both the heating system and the hot water supply. More and more of these...

Micro/Mini combined heat and power cogeneration Cogeneration of heat and power (CHP) can be divided into combustion engines, stirling engines and fuel cells. Dosing and circulator pumps with customised specification are often installed inside the fuel cell process unit. Used secondary circulators are not that different from boiler applications. However, vibrations, liquid temperature and ambient temperature can be relatively high. Often a constant flow is required, therefore a buffer tank is an advantage. Thermal solar system Solar collectors convert sunlight into heat that can be used for heating...

4 UPM external control mode and signals 4. UPM external control mode and signals Control principles The UPM3 and UPM3 FLEX circulators are controlled via a digital low-voltage pulse-width modulation (PWM) signal which means that the speed of rotation depends on the input signal. UPM3 HYBRID circulators are controlled either internally or externally can be set to either internal or externally controlled. The speed changes as a function of the input profile. These communication signals are standardized in the VDMA Einheitsblatt 24244 "Wet runner circulating pumps Specification of PWM control signals"....
