IC Packing Packing is likely the oldest method of shaft sealing. In general it is a very flexible sealing system. Today packing comes in a wide variety of choices. For some application its still very popular method of sealing pumps because of its low upfront cost, easy installation, and readily available materials. Standard arrangement of packing is one ring of packing, a PTFE lantern ring and then three more rows of packing.
