Question 1 Mono layer glass thickness is about 0.3mm,for big diameter glass need to wrap 20-50 layers of glass then can reach the desired pipe pressure. Therefore the plant need to install 8-12 sets of tape wrapping machine, equipment investment is high. And if glass fiber layer has big wall thickness, then the RTP is not so flexible for coiling.

The break elongation of glass fiber is very low, about 1.5-3%. When the steel fitting is installed on the pipe by crimping or swaging, there needs a large value of diameter reducing, such like 5-8mm. Under this condition, the glass fiber at the joint section may be damaged by large compression, resulting in pipe failure.

RTP Solution B: Steel Cord Reinforced RTP

Pipe Design (10 inch) The diameter of high strength steel cord is 1.5mm, and the thickness of tape is 2mm. Large diameter pipe needs to be wound 2-4 layers to meet the design pressure. The equipment investment is smaller and the production process is relatively simple. When the temperature is 65 ℃, the performance is obviously better than that of glass fiber reinforcement. At the same time, it is more flexible and convenient to coil when compared with glass fiber reinforced RTP in large diameter.

High Strength Steel Cord It is made of qualified high carbon steel with surface coating, drawing, twisting and other processes. The steel cord is one of the main framework materials of car tire. Steel cord is classed from normal strength (NT) to high strength (HT), and super high strength (ST) and ultra high strength (UT). We normally select HT and ST for RTP pipe. Features: High tensile strength up to 3500N. The steel cord is made of multi strands of fine steel wire with excellent softness after surface treatment, the anti-corrosion performance of the steel is significantly improved.

Steel Cord Tape Through the tape making machine and technology developed by Goldstone, numbers of steel cords are bonded with polyethylene and made into a reinforced tape. So far, this reinforcement method has been accepted by some pipe plants already, as the solution for their large diameter high pressure pipes. The manufacturers who can supply this kind of steel cord tape are BEKAERT and Goldstone only.

Safety Factor • According to the provisions of API15s for metal reinforced RTP, the design safety factor can be used 0.5. In the practical, the pipe factory usually choice 2.25 times operation pressure as the burst pressure. Because of the higher safety factor, the elongation of steel wire is much better than that of glass fiber, and the buckling joint is not easy to break when it is compressed. Therefore, the performance of steel cord reinforced pipe is better than that of glass fiber reinforced pipe in the temperature resistance test

Question for steel reinforcement • • The corrosion of metal will affect the reinforced pipe service life. According to the provisions of API-15S for metal reinforced RTP, the bursting pressure can be taken as 2 times of the design safety factor, but we usually choose 3 times safety factor. Because of the higher safety factor, and the elongation of steel is much better than glass fiber, so failure is not easy to happen on joint when it is compressed.
