The temperature of the test sample is first rapidly increased, then slowly and at constant rate as the flash point is neared. At specific temperature intervals a small test flame is passed across the cup. The lowest temperature at which application of the test flame ignites the vapours above the surface of the liquid is taken as the flash point.
