Product catalog summary
Overview
GE's Sondex Wireline Open Hole Formation Logging system provides essential data on formation porosity, resistivity, and gas presence, which are crucial for evaluating the commercial viability of wells. The system integrates various tools to offer insights into hydrocarbons, reservoir quality, water saturation, and mechanical properties.
Formation Porosity Measurement
Tools such as the Litho Density Tool (LDT), Compensated Neutron Log (CNL), and Multi Array Sonic (MAS) are used to measure formation porosity, which is vital for determining well performance and production strategies. These tools operate on the Ultrawire* tool bus, enabling simultaneous operation of multiple sensors, thus saving time and resources.
Hydrocarbon and Gas Detection
Accurate measurement of hydrocarbons and gas is essential for determining reserves and formation potential. The CNL, when used with MAS or LDT, confirms gas presence and location.
Lithology and Water Saturation Assessment
Understanding rock mechanics and lithology is critical for production decisions. The MAS and LDT tools evaluate lithological qualities, while the system measures water saturation levels to develop efficient production strategies.
Technology and Reliability
GE's tools are engineered for high reliability and precision, ensuring successful logging operations without costly failures. The U-FLT system includes tools like the Induction Array Tool and Gamma Ray Tool, supported by ongoing R&D and global customer service.
Technical Overview
The MAS tool provides broadband measurements in various rock environments, determining formation travel times and porosities. It features a proprietary design for strength and acoustic isolation, with multi-frequency capability.
Software and Data Processing
MASware* software enhances sonic data processing, offering consistent accuracy and comprehensive quality control. It supports both field and expert modes for detailed data analysis.
Tool Components
  • Compensated Neutron Log (CNL): Measures formation porosity using hydrogen presence, suitable for cased hole environments.
  • Gamma Ray Tool (GRT): Measures natural gamma radiation levels to identify formations and correlate logs.
  • Lithology Density Tool (LDT): Determines formation lithology and density using gamma radiation.
Technical Overview
The document provides a detailed overview of the Lithology Density Tool (LDT) and the Induction Array Tool (IAT), both used in geological formation analysis.
Lithology Density Tool (LDT)
The LDT measures the electron density of formations using a radioactive gamma source and two detectors. It helps determine formation bulk density and porosity by analyzing gamma ray interactions. The tool is effective in differentiating materials like sandstone, limestone, and dolostone. Key features include a full energy spectrum display, quick release source handling, and independent pad deployment for better borehole contact.
Induction Array Tool (IAT)
The IAT measures formation resistivity using magnetic flux to induce currents in the formation. It provides resistivity profiles at various depths and is useful for identifying hydrocarbons. Key features include multiple depths of investigation, short tool length, and integration with SP design.
Components and Accessories
The document describes various components like the Swivel Joint, Knuckle Joint, and Offset Joint, which aid in tool deployment and positioning. Accessories like centralizers and ecentralizers ensure accurate data collection by maintaining tool position and minimizing friction.
Rack Mounted Logging Systems
The Midas Ultrawire* system is highlighted for its real-time data acquisition capabilities, available in both rack-mounted and portable formats. It supports various tools and offers data protection features.
Challenges and Solutions
Several case studies illustrate challenges such as limited drilling overhole and the scarcity of AmBe sources. Solutions include using the U-FLT suite for efficient data acquisition and alternative sources like Cf for logging.
General Specifications
The document concludes with specifications for various tools, including temperature, pressure, and diameter ratings.

Compensated Neutron Log The Compensated Neutron Log tool (CNL) measures the formation porosity based on the presence of hydrogen when run in combination with other tools to deliver high quality data. This can be used in a cased hole environment to establish porosity through casing, enabling production to be planned with a greater degree of confidence, enhancing both productivity and efficiency. The CNL contains a neutron emitting source, which produces fast neutrons that bombard the formation. The neutrons are slowed (or thermalized) by collision, some of the slowed neutrons return to the CNL....
