1 2.865.01-1 Sensor system DEFECTOMINI 2.865.01-1 Fig 1 Sensor system DEFECTOMINI integrated to a drum wire drawing machine Application The sensor system DEFECTOMINI improves significantly the detection of flaws for wires and tubes with small diameter from 0.3 mm to 4.0 mm. The field of application is diversified and varies from stainless steel with excellent surface for medical use to wires for the chemical and electrical industry. Test coils from 0.5 to 4.5 mm are available for detection of smallest surface flaws using the eddy-current method. The sensor system DEFECTOMINI permits testing of all conductive metals including ferritic material by using permanent magnets. The compact design of the sensor system DEFECTOMINI allows perfectly the integration to wire drawing machines. The test coil guides itself on the wire and is therefore able to balance variation in the direction.

2.865.01-1 2 Mode of operation The sensor system DEFECTOMINI operates according the eddy-current principle with throughtype test coils. The electrical test signals are generated by the electromagnetic interaction between test object and test coil when the test object passes through the coil. Test coils in a multidifferential configuration are used for most test tasks. Adjacent material areas are compared using differential coils. Short surface flaws that run deep to the material are detected by the differential coil with high sensitivity. Elongated flaws are displayed according to their...

3 2.865.01-1 Mechanical construction In general a complete DEFECTOMINI test system is set up modular and consists of • Testing and evaluation electronics • Sensor system • Cables and accessories Testing and evaluation electronics Fig 3 Testing and evaluation electronics DEFECTOMAT DI Test coil Test coils from 0.5 to 4.5 mm in steps of 0.5 mm are available. Any test request can be realized quickly by simply changing the test coil. The test coil consists of a coil housing (Fig 4, Item 1) with a supporting tube (Item 2) on each side. The centrally positioned coil housing stores the coil unit....

2.865.01-1 4 Roller guides An adjustable roller guide is placed behind and in front of the test coil to guide the sensor system precisely on the wire. The roller guides assure a vibration-free material guidance within the sensor system. Fig 6 A set of roller guides Magnetizing The sensor system permits testing of all conductive metals including ferritic material by using permanent magnets. These are put on both sides of the supporting tube and fixed to the desired distance to the coil housing. Mechanical fixed positions permit a reproducible setting. Sets of magnets with single, double or...

5 2.865.01-1 Fig 10 Long model of flexible holder Demagnetization Various acceptance and delivery specifications for semi-finished products demand that these parts should not be magnetized or that their residual field strength lie below a stipulated limit value. This can be reduced back to the prescribed values only by using a magnetic alternating field. Demagnetizer EMAG Mini consists of a power supply and a demagnetization coil. The power supply is mounted in a robust housing (Fig 11, Item 1). A socket (Item 2) liaises to the demagnetization coil. An indicator lamp (Item 3) reports...
