The MAAGTM MAX Drive is an innovative gear drive system designed for vertical mills, capable of handling up to 15 MW. It leverages FLSmidth MAAG Gear's century-long expertise in high-quality gear manufacturing, offering a complete drive system from a single source for optimized performance and customer-specific adaptations.
The MAX Drive features a three-stage spur gear unit with torque split, utilizing two equal gear units to operate the girth gear. This design ensures equal torque distribution and automatic correction of imbalances through flexible couplings. The self-alignment of pinions is achieved via crowned toothing, ensuring full tooth contact.
The central part supports the grinding table and includes a high-quality tilting-pad thrust bearing, adapted from MAAG WPU/WPV gearboxes. This bearing is lubricated by high- and low-pressure oil pumps, with continuous temperature monitoring.
The system uses a squirrel cage vertical motor with a roller bearing and spline connection, adapted for this specific application.
The gearbox is lubricated by a closed-circuit oil system, featuring standardized components for easy handling and cost efficiency. The system includes motor pumps, a double oil filter, an oil cooler, and an instrument panel, all monitored digitally for reliability.
The girth gear is fabricated from high-quality alloy steel, ensuring high fatigue and wear resistance. A new sealing concept protects the gear from dust, using a labyrinth sealing, brush, and dust protection shield.

Lubrication system The gearbox is lubricated by a closed circuit oil system. The oil tank serves as a platform on which all the assemblies and components such as motor pumps (high and low pressure), switchable double oil filter, oil cooler and instrument panel are installed. The design of the lubrication system is standardised thus it is applicable for several gear types. This ensures easy handling, optimal insertion and low costs.
