Rotary Unions - Product Brochure

Product catalog summary
Introduction to Rotary Unions: Rotary Unions are devices that facilitate the leakproof transfer of fluids between stationary services and rotating components. They consist of rotary seals and bearing support systems. Filton offers two main seal types: Bellows Seal for general applications and Mechanical Seal for higher pressure and speed requirements.
Specifications: Designed for factory environments, Rotary Unions require fluids free of abrasive particles, with treated water systems to prevent scaling. High precision in seal crafting ensures optimal performance.
Bearings: Filton provides various bearing types, including standard ball bearings, angular contact ball bearings, and carbon journal and thrust bearings. Ball bearings withstand temperatures up to 180°C, while carbon bearings can handle up to 300°C but have speed limitations.
Company Background: Established in 1942, Filton Limited is a leading manufacturer of Rotary Unions, focusing on advanced rotary seals and custom designs for complex sealing challenges. Quality assurance includes rigorous inspections and pressure testing.
Types of Rotary Unions:
  • Type B.E.: Single flow unit for fluid transfer in rotating machines.
  • Type S.T.: Double flow with a stationary center tube, suitable for steam applications.
  • Type R.S.: Double flow with a rotating center tube, allowing slight internal leakage.
Operational Guidelines:
  • Fluids: Suitable for water, steam, mineral oils, heat transfer fluids, and lubricated compressed air.
  • Pressure: Maximum of 17 bar.
  • Vacuum: Maximum of 740 mm Hg.
  • Temperature: -20° to 180°C, extendable to 200°C with proper lubrication.
  • Speed: Up to 1000 r.p.m. for sizes up to 25(1") and 800 r.p.m. for larger sizes.
Flow Capacity: Detailed flow capacities are provided for various nominal sizes, indicating maximum flow rates for water, steam, and air.
Installation and Maintenance: Installation instructions are provided on page 28. The bellows seal's self-adjusting nature minimizes regular maintenance.
Overview: The document provides technical specifications and operational guidelines for various Rotary Unions, specifically R.E.B., C.B., and C.B.N. types, used for fluid transfer in rotating machinery. These unions utilize a bellows seal system for leak-proof operation.
Specifications: Lists several rotary union types, including L.C., P.N., M.C.T., and I.N.T., each with unique features and specifications. Dimensions are in millimeters, with part numbers for different nominal sizes and thread types. Unions are available with right-hand (RH) or left-hand (LH) spindle threads.
Rotary (L.C.) Unions: Designed for light-duty applications, suitable for low pressures, temperatures, and modest speeds. Available in L.C./B.E. for single flow and L.C./S.T. for double flow with a stationary center tube.
Rotary (P.N.) Unions: Include an oil lubrication reservoir for seal face lubrication, suitable for pneumatic applications with dry compressed air, designed for single flow applications, handling speeds up to 2500 rpm.
Rotary (M.C.T.) Unions: Intended for machine tools, using a balanced mechanical seal, available in single and double flow configurations, handling higher pressures and speeds.
Rotary (I.N.T.) Unions: Used where space is limited, featuring a bellows seal for water and steam applications, available in single and double flow types.
Operational Guidelines: Each union type has specific guidelines for fluids, pressure, temperature, and speed. Special seals are available for abrasive conditions.
Accessories: Describes the Filton Syphon Elbow, an accessory for steam service applications, allowing straight pipes instead of curved syphon tubes.
Specifications: Outlines specifications for various Filton Rotary Unions, including R.E., P.B., R.E.B., C.B., and C.B.N. unions. Details construction of flexible hoses with stainless steel convoluted tubes, external reinforcing braids, and mild steel end fittings.
Procedures: Installation instructions emphasize matching the thread 'A' of the syphon elbow with the appropriate rotary union. Regular inspection for leaks and bearing wear is recommended.
Standards and Norms: References standards for pipe threads and flange specifications.
Recommendations: Advises fitting an excess torque detector for hazardous applications and using flanged connections for high-temperature applications.
Key Data from Tables: Provides detailed dimensions for flexible hoses and rotary union spindle threads, specifying nominal sizes, thread types, and pressure ratings.
Special Features: Special rotary unions, such as multi-port and overshaft designs, are available for specific applications.
Health and Safety: Emphasizes daily inspections for leaks and the use of protective guards to prevent hazards.
Specifications: Outlines specifications for rotary unions and components, including bearings, seals, and lubricants. Recommends Kluber Isoflex NBU15 and Kluber TK.44N as lubricants.
Procedures: Details maintenance procedures, emphasizing periodic lubrication and replacement of seals and bearings upon leakage.
Standards and Recommendations: Provides a list of recommended greases and guidelines for selecting suitable fittings and connections.
Maintenance and Repair: Highlights the importance of avoiding rigid pipe connections and offers repair services at the factory.

Rotary Unions - Product Brochure-2

A Rotary Union is a device which can be connected to arotating shaft and allow the leakproof transfer of fluids to and from the stationary services. The vital components of Rotary unions are the rotary sealsand the bearing support systems. For the majority of applications the FILTON BELLOWS SEAL is the most efficient. If pressure and/or speed exceed the capability ofthe bellows seal we can provide a FILTON MECHANICAL SEAL. > These products are intended for use on a factory environment. Contact us if the installation issubjected to climatic conditions.Fluids should be free of abrasive particles...

1.Body.2.Mechanical seal assembly. 3.Ball bearings - life lubricated. 4.Rotary spindle. THIS PART ROTATES WITH THE SHAFT The Rotary (L.C.) Union is intended to light duty applications and is of a simple design using the minimum amount of parts. It is not intended asa unit that can be repaired, though this is possible. For low pressures, temperatures and modest speeds with occasional use it is ideal. For continuous use and easy repairability we recommend the Rotary (R.E.) Union (see page 4), or the Rotary (P.B.) Union (see page 6). TheRotary (L.C.) Union is also useful if there are space limitations,...

Union has the same basic design as the Rotary (L.C.) Union but incorporates an oil lubrication reservoir for seal face lubrication. This unit is intended for use on pneumatic applications where the compressed air is dry. This unit may also be advantageous compared to theRotary (L.C.) Union even on lubricated air systems where speeds are high and only occasional pneumatic cycles are in use. Under theseconditions very...

The FILTON SYPHON ELBOW is a useful accessory for Rotary(P.B.), (R.E.B), (C.B.) and (C.B.N.) Unions, type S.T. on steam service. The majority of steam cylinders are fitted with a curved syphon tubefor condensate extraction, this can be seen from the typical application drawing shown on page 3.If the diameter to length ratio of the cylinder end bore prevents theuse of a curved syphon tube from being fitted the FILTON SYPHON ELBOW should be used. This allows two pieces of straight pipe to be used, the FlLTON SYPHON ELBOW hinging open to allow fitting through the bore of the cylinder end.It is advisable...

These are manufactured on a specialbasis but can at times be manufactured using the basic bearing housing and main seal from any of the standard Rotary Union range shown in this technical manual. The illustration on the right shows atypical construction using two rotating centre tubes for 3 flow channels. We use Filton Bellows Seals or Filton Mechanical Seals, dependant upon working conditions, between each flow channel. If it is essential to prevent any crosstalkӔ between channels then a double seal having a bleed to atmosphere can be incorporated. > At times it can be useful with multi-flow channels...
