Product catalog summary
Overview of FerrX 5000
The FerrX 5000 is a magnetic separator designed to efficiently remove ferrous materials from effluents in automotive and other welded body units before paint application. It boasts a high efficiency rate, removing an average of 98% of ferrous particles, and offers a quick return on investment within 12 to 24 weeks by reducing production costs and enhancing first-run capabilities.
Benefits
  • Reduces paint finish defects by over 50%.
  • Enhances productivity and quality, leading to significant cost savings.
  • Features low installation costs and durable construction.
  • Automated and self-cleaning, requiring minimal maintenance.
Specifications
  • Primarily constructed from stainless steel.
  • Not suitable for use with zinc oxide or phosphoric solutions.
  • Cartridge module is removable for inspection and cleaning.
Installation and Maintenance
FSI recommends installing the FerrX 5000 independently of existing plant pumps and piping, ideally in the deluge or high-pressure wash stages of the phosphate pre-cleaning process. The system is easy to shut down and requires annual inspection of the cartridge module.
Impact on Phosphate Process
The FerrX 5000 minimally impacts the phosphate process, as it does not introduce chemicals, electrical charges, or heat. It effectively removes ferrous materials, reducing defects in the electrodeposition surface.
Field Performance
Field trials demonstrate the FerrX 5000's ability to remove over 50 pounds of ferrous material daily, significantly reducing defects caused by weld balls and other ferrous metals. This leads to improved first-run capability and reduced labor costs.
Conclusion
The FerrX 5000 is an innovative solution for reducing paint finish defects and improving productivity in assembly plants. Its strategic placement in the phosphate pre-treat system can lead to substantial long-term benefits and cost savings.
Economic and Operational Benefits
The FerrX 5000 offers significant cost savings, paying for itself within 12 to 24 weeks. It enhances first-run capabilities, reduces rework time and labor, and saves substantial production costs. The unit removes approximately 98% of ferrous particles.
Recognition and Additional Offerings
The FerrX 5000 has been recognized as a finalist in the 2003 Plant Engineering Product of the Year and the 2004 PACE Award competitions. FSI, established in 1972, holds over 100 patents and offers a wide range of filtration products.

It is designed as a cartridge module that can be removed, inspected, rinsed and replaced if no wear is apparent. The FerrX 5000 is automated and self-cleaning. Therefore, it does not require the daily involvement of plant personnel. Field tests have shown that the unit collects only ferrous materials and trace amounts of agglomerated oil, yet very little of any other substance, including body shop sealers and adhesives. It is recommended that the plant perform an inspection of the cartridge module once per year. If the unit requires repair, the module can be exchanged for a nominal cost. FSI has even designed a custom container to protect the module while in transit. Impact on the Phosphate Process FSI recommends that the FerrX 5000 be installed independent of the existing plant pumps and piping in either the deluge, high-pressure wash or rinse stages of the phosphate pre-cleaning process. The supply piping should access the most metal-laden effluent existing in the process. No chemicals, electrical charge or heat come into contact with the process effluent resulting in the equipment having little effect on the process except for the removal of ferrous material. Shutting the system down is as simple as pushing a button.
