Description

Capacitive sensors are designed to detect various materials, including liquids, plastics, and wood. They feature a selectable normally open or normally closed output and operate within a voltage range of 20 - 250 V AC/DC, reducing inventory needs. The sensors are housed in a 30 mm diameter cylindrical case, offering dust, water, shock, and vibration resistance. An LED indicates output status, and short circuit protection is provided. Sensitivity can be adjusted via a screw, useful for applications like container level detection. A waterproof protective housing is available, made from non-toxic material, allowing easy sensor removal and protection from abrasion.

Operating Principle

Capacitive proximity sensors detect objects by measuring the variation in parasitic capacity between the sensor and the object. When an object is within a preset distance, the sensor's internal circuit oscillates, triggering a threshold circuit that activates an external load. The operating distance is influenced by the object's material, with different sensitivity levels for metal, water, plastic, glass, and wood.

Advantages and Considerations
  • Reduces stock and simplifies installation.
  • Not polarity sensitive and compatible with PLC units.
  • No separate power supply required.
  • Minimum current for load must meet sensor's minimum switching current.
  • Leakage current is low enough to not activate high impedance inputs.
  • Consider "on state" voltage drop with low supply voltage.
Model Specifications

Models S5140, S5141, S5170, and S5171 offer operating distances of 0-20 mm and 0-25 mm, respectively. They feature a power supply range of 20 - 250 V AC/DC, a maximum switching current of 500 mA, and a minimum switching current of 10 mA. The sensors have a leakage current of ≤ 2 mA and a voltage drop of < 6V in the "on state." They are available in nickel-plated brass or plastic cases, with protection degree IP 65 and operating temperatures from -20 to +70°C.

Installation and Adjustment

Before powering the sensor, set the NO/NC function using the selector switch. Adjust sensitivity by removing the plastic protection screw and turning the internal trimmer. Clockwise increases sensitivity, while counterclockwise decreases it. The LED indicates the presence or absence of material based on the output type.

Capacitive NO/NC Selectable AC/DC Sensors-1

Capacitive NO/NC Selectable AC/DC Sensors FEATURES • • • • • • • • • • • DESCRIPTION Capacitive sensors are used to detect metallic and non-metallic objects (liquid, plastic, wooden materials and so on). These capacitive sensors have a normally open or normally closed output selector switch and operate on a wide voltage range, 20 - 250 V AC/DC. This greatly reduces the need to keep multiple sensors in stock. Their housing consists of a cylindrical threaded metal or plastic 30 mm diameter case. They are dust and water tight as well as shock and vibration resistant. All models feature LED indication of the output status and short circuit protection up to 50V in DC. A screw placed on the sensor allows regulation of the operating distance. This sensitivity regulation is useful in applications, such as detection of full containers and non-detection of empty containers. A waterproof protective housing is available. This housing is made of a non-toxic material (POM) and has a standard 1 1/2" GAS threaded fitting for mounting into a container. This housing permits a sensor to be rapidly removed for testing without the loss of material and protects the sensor from abrasion. The use of the housing can help to eliminate variation in the sensitivity of the sensor due to deposits of material. OPERATING PRINCIPLE Capacitive proximity sensors use the variation of the parasitic capacity that develops between the sensor and the object being detected. When the object is at a preset distance from the sen-sitive side of the sensor, an electronic circuit inside the sensor begins to oscillate. The rise or fall of such oscillation is identified by a threshold circuit that drives an amplifier for the operation of an external load.
