Adhesion Test Apparatus OverviewThe Adhesion Test Apparatus, Model 525, is designed to measure adhesion according to ASTM D 4541. It is suitable for testing various coating materials using a mechanical method that does not require electrical power, making it ideal for field applications.
Purpose and ApplicationThe apparatus is used to assess the adhesive quality of coatings by pulling off a test cylinder (dolly) adhered to the coating. The tensile stress required and the visual examination of the separated surface provide information on the coating's adhesive quality. This method differs from others, such as the cross-cutting test, as it applies force perpendicular to the surface.
Design and FunctionThe apparatus consists of a circular housing with a compressing spring and a cylinder with scales for reading tensile stress. The components are connected by a threaded spindle, and the force is transmitted from the dolly grip to the dolly. The cylinder has scales for tensile stress in N/mm² and lb/in², applicable to areas of 314 mm² or 1964 mm², depending on the dolly diameter.
Technical SpecificationsModels vary in dolly diameter, measuring area, and scale range:
- Model 525-5: 20 mm dolly, 0-5 N/mm² / 0-700 lb/in²
- Model 525-10: 20 mm dolly, 0-10 N/mm² / 0-1500 lb/in²
- Model 525-25: 20 mm dolly, 0-25 N/mm² / 0-3500 lb/in²
- Model 525-B: 50 mm dolly, 0-4.5 N/mm² / 0-650 lb/in², suitable for concrete
All models come with a Manufacturer’s Certificate M, detailing tensile stress values, product identification, and calibration status.
Order Information and AccessoriesEach model includes dollies, adhesive, a carrying case, and operating instructions. Special cutting tools and glue for concrete tests are available as accessories.
Note on AdhesivesWhile a 2-component epoxy resin adhesive is commonly used, its suitability for all surfaces cannot be universally guaranteed due to the variety of materials involved.
