Levelflex M FMP40

Product catalog summary
Overview
The Levelflex M FMP40 is a guided level radar designed for continuous level measurement in both bulk solids and liquids, as well as interface measurement in liquids. It operates independently of various factors such as density, conductivity, dielectric constant, temperature, and dust, making it versatile for industrial applications.
Specifications
The device is unaffected by foam or turbulent surfaces and supports HART with 4 to 20 mA analog, PROFIBUS PA, and FOUNDATION Fieldbus protocols. It is suitable for safety-related systems up to SIL 2 according to IEC 61508/IEC 61511-1 and has WHG approval for overspill protection.
Interface Measurement
The Levelflex M FMP40 measures interfaces between liquids with different dielectric constants and offers electronics versions for simultaneous measurement of interface and total level. A special version is available for constant total level interface measurement.
Benefits
Probes are available with threaded connections from ¾" and flanges from DN40. Different probe types are available for bulk solids and liquids, and the device offers simple onsite operation with a four-line display and envelope curve for diagnostics. Remote operation and documentation are possible via a free operating program. Approvals include ATEX, FM, CSA, TIIS, NEPSI, and IECEx.
Function and System Design
The device uses the Time of Flight (ToF) method for measurement, where high-frequency pulses are reflected by the product surface and converted into level information. The dielectric constant affects pulse reflection, with strong reflection for high DC values.
Input and Output
Reflected pulses are analyzed by a microprocessor to determine the level. The device is factory preset for probe length, but application parameters can be adjusted. A linearization function allows conversion of level to volume or mass.
Measuring System and Probe Selection
Various probe types are available for different applications, including rope, rod, and coax probes, suitable for bulk solids, liquids, and interface measurement. Maximum probe lengths vary by application and probe type.
Installation and Operating Conditions
Detailed instructions are provided for installation in various scenarios, including nozzles and heat insulation. Operating conditions cover ambient and process temperature ranges, pressure limits, and dielectric constants.
Mechanical Construction
Information on design, dimensions, and materials used is provided, along with details on process connections and probe materials.
Human Interface
The operating concept includes local and remote operation options, with user-friendly display and operating elements.
Certificates and Approvals
The device has a CE mark and Ex approval for safety and compliance, with standards applied for overfill prevention and telecommunications.
Ordering Information
Details on the Levelflex M FMP40 and available accessories are provided, along with additional documentation and special instructions.
System Integration
The Levelflex M FMP40 can be integrated into systems via PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION Fieldbus, supporting up to 32 transmitters. It is compatible with various tank gauging systems and supports multiple protocols for connectivity. Remote monitoring and maintenance are possible through Fieldgates, which can alert personnel via email or SMS.
Measuring Capabilities
The device measures the distance between a reference point and the product surface, with a measuring range influenced by the media group. It supports interface measurement up to 10 m, with larger ranges available on request.
Output and Communication
Output signal options include 4 to 20 mA with HART protocol, PROFIBUS PA, and FOUNDATION Fieldbus. Error information can be accessed through local displays or digital interfaces, and the system supports linearization for converting measured values into various units.
Electrical and Housing Details
The Levelflex M FMP40 offers different housing options, including aluminum and stainless steel, with features for dust ignition-proof and explosion-proof environments. The housing can be rotated for easier access, and a good ground connection is necessary for EMC security.
Installation and Connection
Guidance is provided on terminal assignments and cable specifications, emphasizing the need for shielded cables when using superimposed communication signals. Protective circuitry is built into the device to guard against reverse polarity and over-voltage peaks.
Mounting and Installation
Detailed instructions for mounting the Levelflex M FMP40 emphasize reliable and isolated mounting. A mounting kit is suggested for isolation, and the importance of considering tensile loads exerted by bulk solids on rope probes is highlighted. Key factors affecting tensile load include probe length, bulk density, silo diameter, and probe rope diameter.
Tensile Load Considerations
Conditions for calculating tensile forces are outlined, including suspended probes and free-flowing bulk solids. A safety factor of 2 is advised for normal fluctuations in bulk solids. Recommendations for reducing tensile forces include shortening the probe or using non-contact devices like Ultrasonic or Level-Radar.
Special Notes for Liquids
For installations in agitation units, non-contact processes are recommended. Coax probes are preferred for their higher lateral load-bearing capacity and reliability in measuring liquids with viscosities below 500 cst.
Measurement in Corrosive and Underground Tanks
For corrosive liquids, the Levelflex M FMP41C is recommended. Installation instructions for plastic tanks and underground tanks are provided, highlighting the use of coax probes to avoid reflections.
Interface Measurement
The document details the use of Levelflex M with "Interface" electronics for measuring interfaces, specifying conditions such as known dielectric constants and minimum interface thickness. The HART protocol is used for dynamic variable assignment, and the HART Loop Converter HMX50 is recommended for converting variables.
General Installation Instructions
Guidelines for probe length and installation in nozzles are provided. The document advises ordering longer probes for flexibility and using extension rods with centering disks for stability. Special considerations for nozzles with large diameters are discussed, including the use of horn adapters to prevent faulty measurements.
Conclusion
The document provides comprehensive guidelines for the installation and operation of the Levelflex M FMP40, emphasizing the importance of considering environmental factors and product characteristics to ensure accurate measurements and reliable performance.

Levelflex M FMP40 Function and system design Measuring principle The Levelflex is a "downward-looking" measuring system that functions according to the ToF method (ToF = Time of Flight). The distance from the reference point (process connection of the measuring device, → ä 43) to the product surface is measured. High-frequency pulses are injected to a probe and led along the probe. The pulses are reflected by the product surface, received by the electronic evaluation unit and converted into level information. This method is also known as TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry). flange: reference point...

Levelflex M FMP40 Interface measurement When the high-frequency pulses hit the surface of the medium, only a percentage of the transmission pulse is reflected. In the case of media with a low DC1, in particular, the other part penetrates the medium. The pulse is reflected once more at the interface point to a second medium with a higher DC2. The distance to the interface layer now can also be determined taking into account the delayed time-of-flight of the pulse through the upper medium. c = c0 = 300 000 km/s total level DK1 C1 = C0 DK1 interface level DK2 L00-FMP4xxxx-15-00-00-en-007 Output...
