Product catalog summary
Introduction to Gloss Measurement
Gloss measurement involves directing a light beam at a surface and measuring the reflected light with a glossmeter. Different surfaces require specific angles for accurate measurement. High gloss surfaces reflect images clearly, while semi and matt surfaces scatter light, resulting in diffused reflection.
Gloss Measurement Angles
Gloss is measured in Gloss Units (GU) relative to a polished glass standard. The standard measurement angle is 60°, but for results below 10GU, an 85° angle is used for low gloss, and for results above 70GU, a 20° angle is used for high gloss. For anodised metals, all three angles (20°, 60°, 85°) should be recorded.
Reflectance and Haze
Reflectance is expressed as a percentage comparing transmitted and received light energy. Haze, measured in Haze Units (HU), affects visual quality by creating halos around light sources and is the difference between specular reflectance at 60° and 20°.
Elcometer 480 Glossmeters
The Elcometer 480 series provides high accuracy and functionality, measuring gloss, % reflectance, and haze. It supports multiple angles (20°, 60°, 85°) and has a memory capacity for 40,000 readings. Data can be transferred via USB or Bluetooth®.
Model Variants and Features
The Elcometer 480 is available in single, dual, or triple angle models, featuring auto calibration, multiple measurement modes, and differential mode with pass/fail analysis. It supports up to 40 user-defined limit standards.
Data Management with ElcoMaster®
ElcoMaster® software aids in data management and report generation, allowing real-time data transfer, batch storage, and integration of inspection parameters. It supports collaboration and data sharing via cloud services.
Technical Specifications
The Elcometer 480 features a 2.4” color display, operates in temperatures from -10°C to 50°C, and weighs 534g. It is powered by USB or AA batteries and includes a comprehensive packing list with calibration certificates and software.

Elcometer 480 - Glossmeters-2

Appearance Visual appearance can determine a person’s perception of a product. Perception is subjective. A key measurement parameter used to define and quantify a product’s overall visual quality is gloss. Gloss is measured by directing a constant intensity light beam, at a fixed angle, on to the test surface and then monitoring the amount of reflected light from the same angle. This specular reflectance is measured using a glossmeter. Different surfaces require different reflective angles. High Gloss High Gloss Surfaces with a brilliant or highly polished finish reflect images clearly. This...

Choosing the correct angle for gloss measurement Gloss measurement is based on the amount of light reflected on the surface relative to a polished glass reference standard, measured in Gloss Units (GU). The amount of light that is reflected on the surface is dependent on the angle of incidence and the properties of the surface. Gloss is categorised as either matt, semi or high gloss. In order to determine the most appropriate measurement angle start with a glossmeter set at a 60° angle of incidence. If the result is between 10 - 70GU, the coating is termed ‘semi-gloss’ and should be measured...
