L’aria in ingresso al biotrickling attraversa dall’alto verso il basso il letto filtrante, composto da materiale siliceo/calcareo (lapilli, gusci di mitili, ecc.) che ha una durata di alcuni anni. Questa materiale, umidificato e quindi in ambiente acquoso, si riveste dal “biofilm” in cui risiedono i microrganismi che metabolizzano gli inquinanti in essa contenuti. Questi vengono trasformati in vapor d’acqua, anidride carbonica e biomassa tramite una reazione di ossidazione biologica con l’ossigeno contenuto nell’aria. Deve quindi essere garantita un’adeguata distribuzione dell’aria in tutto il volume del letto per facilitare la diffusione dell’ossigeno nel biofilm. Una corretta gestione del biotrickling prevede inoltre il controllo della temperatura e l’apporto degli opportuni nutrienti. Rispetto al biofiltro il biotrickling è un sistema chiuso, più efficiente, che richiede minor spazio in pianta. Air enters the biotrickler and travels downward through the filtration bed, which is composed of siliceous/calcareous material (lapilli, mollusck shells etc.) and can last for several years. This material, humidified within the biotrickler, is coated with an aqueous ”biofilm” that houses the micro-organisms which metabolize the contaminants present in the air (through biological oxidation), transforming them into water vapour, carbon dioxide and biomass. Thus there has to be an even distribution of air throughout the whole bed volume, to facilitate the circulation of oxygen throughout the biofilm.
