Expanding Type Clutches and Brakes

Product catalog summary
Expanding Features
EATON Airflex® clutches and brakes use a neoprene and cord tube that expands radially when pressurized, ensuring uniform contact velocity and maximizing torque by applying force at the maximum radius from the axis. The system efficiently dissipates heat, self-adjusts for wear, requires no lubrication, and operates in any plane.
E and VE Elements
Designed for moderate to heavy-duty applications, these elements are suitable for medium-speed cyclic operations with large thermal loads. VE elements have enhanced ventilation for better cooling. Torque depends on applied pressure, spring force, and speed, with catalog ratings at 75 psi. E elements are available in 10 sizes, while VE elements come in 3 sizes.
Technical and Dimensional Data
The document provides detailed technical specifications and dimensional data for E and VE elements, including torque ratings, maximum speeds, and dimensions. It includes tables with torque ratings in both English and SI units, and notes on tolerances and material specifications.
Clutch and Brake Applications
Applications include construction equipment, marine winches, metalworking machinery, slip clutches, and tension brakes. The document outlines the suitability of different element types for various industrial applications.
Mounting Components
Details on mounting components are provided, including descriptions of housing halves, torque bars, friction shoe assemblies, and release springs. The document specifies the components required for assembly and maintenance.
Selection Procedure
The selection procedure involves adjusting for operating pressure, spring force, and speed to determine the appropriate element for specific applications. Guidance is provided on selecting the correct size and type of element based on application requirements.
Overview
This document provides detailed technical specifications, procedures, and recommendations for EATON Airflex® Clutches & Brakes, focusing on the EB and ER mounting components. It includes dimensional data, torque calculations, and thermal capacities for various sizes.
Specifications
  • Detailed dimensional data for sizes 6 to 24, including part numbers, mass, and dimensions in both metric and imperial units.
  • Notes on tolerances and standards for screw threads.
Procedures
  • Selection procedures for clutches and brakes, emphasizing the importance of reviewing Section Y for general information on mounting, alignment, and control.
  • Element torque calculations, including adjustments for operating pressure, parasitic loss, and operating speed.
Standards and Recommendations
  • Maximum allowable operating pressures and parasitic pressures for different elements.
  • Recommendations for continuous and cyclic thermal capacities, including specific pressure and velocity limits for optimal performance.
Key Data and Tables
  • Tables listing idle RPM for various EB and ER elements.
  • Spring force and parasitic pressure data for E and VE elements.
  • Examples illustrating torque calculations and thermal capacity assessments.
Critical Information
  • Maximum allowable pressures and parasitic pressures must be adhered to for safe operation.
  • Thermal capacities should be calculated carefully to ensure elements can handle the required load.
  • Specific examples provided to guide users in selecting the appropriate element size and configuration.

Airflex® Expanding Features Section C E, EB, ER and VE elements utilize a rugged tire-like neoprene and cord tube that expands radially outward when pressurized. The expanding tube forces a friction surface against an inner cylindrical drum surface. The rate at which the tube is pressurized determines the rate at which element torque increases. Final tube pressure determines the element torque capacity. Design Features Force applied at maximum radius from axis Airflex expanding elements concentrate the frictional force on the inside drum diameter thereby achieving maximum torque. The torque lever...

Airflex® Expanding Features Section C Heat Dissipation Heat, generated at the inner drum surface, is quickly conducted to the drum's exposed outer surface area where it is dissipated by radiation and convection. This feature is ideal for slip clutch and tension brake applications where heat must be dissipated continuously. Drum design permits operation in any plane. A plate type unit operates best in a vertical plane. As friction surfaces wear, the tube expands further and compensates for the wear. Normal wear will not reduce torque capacity. • There are no close fitting sliding components which...

Airflex® E and VE Construction Section C E and VE Construction Type E and VE elements combine rugged design and rigid construction features which make them ideal for moderate to heavy duty clutch and brake service. They are suited for medium speed cyclic applications which are subject to large thermal loads. When used with an air agitating ventilated drum they provide excellent slip clutch and tension brake service. A neoprene rubber and cord tube is contained by two side housings. Friction shoes are held in position on the tube periphery by leaf springs which pass through the shoe back plates...
