Spritzgiessautomaten 2 BOY . Machines with Vertical Clamping Units Solutions for injection moulding of inserts Bonded injection moulding means the cover-moulding of a part inserted into the mould, in order to achieve properties that neither of the two individual components or materials exhibit by themselves. Insert moulding furthermore eliminates an otherwise necessary, additional step during assembly. Bonds that cannot otherwise be achieved can be automatically integrated into the production process. There is almost unlimited freedom regarding the production process and selection of...

Spritzgiessautomaten 3 Plastic / Metal Bonds Plastic / metal bonds are found in many articles of everyday use. Commodity goods such as keys, knives, tool handles, or parts of appliances are often metal parts cover-moulded in plastic (photo 5). Contact pins used for the electronics industry are cover-moulded with plastic, just like cable endings, and components are insulated by insert moulding. Bonding of Plastic on Metals The bonding between the plastic part and the cover-moulded metal part is often the decisive factor for the functionality of the finished product. Basically, plastic does...

Spritzgiessautomaten 4 Although these mechanically intermeshing bonds and pressfits are often sufficient in order to mould a high-quality part from a rigid plastic, there is an additional aspect to be considered regarding the bonding between an elastic plastic and a rigid metal. Elastomers are characterized by a low modulus of elasticity, which means that these materials are subject to significant deformation even under low stress. Metals, however, usually exhibit a very high modulus of elasticity, thus are a lot less prone to deformation under stress. These different deformations of the...

Spritzgiessautomaten 5 Even inserting injection-moulded parts, which actually have a high degree of dimensional accuracy, can lead to problems. As the post-shrinkage of plastic is rather pronounced and highly reproducible, it is important to observe fixed time intervals between the production of the insert and the insert moulding process. After two to three days, the post-shrinkage process is more or less finished, so its effect is negligible. This means for processing that the inserts, after production, either have to be used within a fixed (and brief) time frame, or should be placed in...

Spritzgiessautomaten 6 Position of the Gate If an insert is fixed close to the clamping point, flash formation is easier to control. As pressure in the cavity is still relatively low when filling the clamping area closest to the gate, the melt does not seep into the smallest crack, but instead quickly cools off at the contact points with the mould wall. The thus formed rigid skin limits excess injection during the compression phase in the cavity. Consequently, clamping points at the end of the flow path have a higher tendency towards flash formation. Special Aspects of the Injection...

Spritzgiessautomaten 7 Processing of TPA Materials The processing of TPA materials (polyamide elastomers), frequently used as a substitute for embedding compounds to insulate components, requires precise control of the lowest injection and holding pressures, as this material features an extremely low viscosity. Gentle processing of these materials known by such trade names as Pebax, Grilamid, or Zytel FN is only possible on injection moulding machines with a direct electronically controlled hydraulic system. In addition to the precise control of the lowest pressures, the gentle and...

Spritzgiessautomaten 8 Sliding table systems can be operated manually, pneumatically, or hydraulically. Feeding and retracting processes can be controlled via the core pull function (optional) of the machine (photo 13). Especially for cable fabrication and to mould tail pieces to extruded profiles, the sliding table is a valuable option. This is mainly due to the fact that these often rather long and bulky components do not easily fit on a turntable. Swivel or sliding tables are typical automated exchange systems. More complex applications with additional processing steps can also use...

Spritzgiessautomaten 9 Using linear or Swivel Arm Handling Devices Via the standardized Euromap 16 handling interface (optional), control units of handling devices can exchange signals with the injection moulding machine which are required for the demoulding and insertion of parts. As with BOY insert moulding machines, the front as well as the rear mould areas are easily accessible, it is advisable to install the handling device on the machine frame behind the clamping unit. In this position, the device does not need much space, but can still operate without problems, offering easy access...

10 Spritzgiessautomaten Working with Endless Belts A special form of manufacturing bonded parts, which can easily be automated, is the injection of plastic parts onto a belt continuously running through the mould (photo 16). The insert has to be an integral part of the belt and must be detachable from it later on by way of punching. Feed units with a high degree of positioning accuracy move the carrier belt through the injection mould. The belt is fixed precisely within the cavity when the mould is clamped shut. Demoulding has to take place simultaneous with the mould opening; the belt...
