Buck converter AP1501

Product catalog summary
Overview: The AP1501 is a 150KHz, 3A PWM Buck DC/DC Converter designed for efficient step-down voltage regulation. It offers fixed output voltages of 3.3V, 5V, and 12V, and an adjustable output version from 1.23V to 37V. It includes a switching transistor and operates at a fixed frequency of 150KHz.
Key Features:
  • Output voltage options: 3.3V, 5V, 12V, and adjustable (1.23V to 37V).
  • 150KHz fixed switching frequency with +/- 15% tolerance.
  • Voltage mode non-synchronous PWM control.
  • Thermal shutdown and current-limit protection.
  • ON/OFF shutdown control input.
  • Operating voltage up to 40V with a 3A output load current.
  • Low power standby mode and built-in switching transistor.
  • Available in lead-free TO263-5L and TO220-5L(R) packages.
Applications: Suitable for high-efficiency step-down regulators, on-card switching regulators, and positive to negative converters.
Pin Descriptions:
  • VIN: Operating voltage input.
  • Output: Switching output.
  • Gnd: Ground.
  • FB: Output voltage feedback control.
  • SD: ON/OFF shutdown control.
Electrical Characteristics: Operates with a supply voltage range of 4.5V to 40V and an ambient temperature range of -20°C to 85°C. Features a feedback bias current of 40-100nA and an oscillator frequency of 127-173KHz. Saturation voltage is 1.3V to 1.5V, and current limit ranges from 3.6A to 6.5A.
Thermal Considerations: Requires heat dissipation measures, especially in the TO-220 package, which typically needs a heat sink. The TO-263 package should be soldered to a copper area on a PCB for effective heat dissipation. Larger copper areas and airflow improve thermal performance.
Typical Application Circuits: Provides example circuits for fixed and adjustable output configurations, including component values for capacitors, inductors, and resistors.
Thermal Management Considerations: Discusses factors affecting thermal resistance and junction temperature rise, including board size, shape, thickness, trace width, copper area, and solder amount. Heat dissipation effectiveness is influenced by component size, quantity, spacing, and air movement.
Component Heat Contribution: Components like the catch diode and inductor can add or dissipate heat based on characteristics and input voltage. The inductor's role as a heat sink or source depends on its size, core material, and DC resistance.
Product Information: The AP1501 is available in different output types (ADJ, 3.3V, 5.0V, 12V) and package types (TO263-5L, TO220-5L, TO220-5L(R)).
Marking and Package Information: Provides details on marking information and mechanical drawings for different package types.

Buck converter AP1501-1

AP1501 150KHz, 3A PWM BUCK DC/DC CONVERTER General Description The AP1501 is a fully integrated step-down DC/DC converter, with the ability to drive 3A load without the need of additional driver components. The AP1501 operates at a switching frequency of 150KHZ enabling the use of small size filter components. As a result, board space is reduced and BOM costs are lowered. Output voltage: 3.3V, 5V, 12V and adjustable output version Adjustable version output voltage range, 1.23V to 37V+4% 150KHZ +15% fixed switching frequency Voltage mode non-synchronous PWM control Thermal-shutdown and current-limit protection ON/OFF shutdown control input Operating voltage can be up to 40V Output load current: 3A Low power standby mode Built-in switching transistor on chip Lead Free packages: TO263-5L and TO220-5L(R) TO263-5L and TO220-5L(R): Available in “Green” Molding Compound (No Br, Sb) Lead Free Finish/RoHS Compliant (Note 1) The AP1501 has integrated the shutdown function that allows standby mode to be activated via an external logic signal input. The internal compensation facilitates feedback control for line and load regulation without the need of an external circuitry. The AP1501 has a built-in Thermal shutdown and Current Limit function to prevent damage from high operating temperature and high current operating to the output switch. Additional features include a guaranteed +/- 4% tolerance on the output voltage under specified input and output load conditions, and +/- 15% on oscillator frequency. The AP1501 offers both fixed and a Adjustable output voltages. For fixed outputs the AP1501 supports 3.3V, 5.0V and 12V. The package options available are standard 5-lead TO263 and TO220(R) packages. AP1501 150KHz, 3A PWM BUCK DC/DC CONVERTER Functional Description Pin Functions +VIN This is the positive input supply for the IC switching regulator. A suitable input bypass capacitor must be present at this pin to minimize voltage transients and to supply the switching currents needed by the regulator. Ground Circuit ground. Output Internal switch. The voltage at this pin switches between (+VIN – VSAT) and approximately – 0.5V, with a duty cycle of approximately VOUT / VIN. To minimize coupling to sensitive circuitry, the PC board copper area connected to this pin should be kept a minimum....
