Overview of PTFE Properties:
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a polymer distinguished by its unique combination of physical and chemical properties. Key features include extreme chemical inertness, excellent heat resistance, optimal dielectric properties, zero hygroscopicity, maximum solvent resistance, excellent aging resistance, self-lubricating properties, and a minimal friction coefficient.
Chemical Properties:
PTFE is resistant to nearly all chemical reactants, except for elemental alkali metals, chlorotrifluorides, and elemental fluorine at high temperatures and pressures. It remains insoluble in solvents up to 300°C, although some highly fluorinated oils can swell and dissolve it near its crystalline melting point.
Thermal Properties:
PTFE serves as a thermal insulator due to its low heat transmission factor. It is non-flammable and stable at temperatures up to 260°C for indefinite periods.
Electrical Properties:
PTFE exhibits excellent dielectric properties across a wide range of temperatures and frequencies. Its negligible water absorption ensures these properties remain unchanged even after prolonged exposure to weather. It has significant resistance to arcing, producing non-conductive vapors instead of carbon residues.
Mechanical Properties:
At 23°C, PTFE displays specific mechanical properties, with a notable transition point between 19°C and 21°C due to changes in its crystalline structure, causing a volume change of about 1%. It is non-adhesive and has a low friction coefficient, especially under high loads.
Dimensional Checks:
Dimensional assessment of PTFE products requires suitable techniques due to its transition point around 20°C, necessitating specific measures for strict tolerance limits and standardized control procedures.
Filled PTFE:
For applications requiring enhanced performance, filled PTFE grades are used. These are modified with additives like glass fibers, carbon, graphite, molybdenum bisulphide, bronze, and ceramic powder. Fillers can increase compressive strength, wear resistance, reduce thermal expansion, and alter resistivity and hardness.
Standard Composition Codes:
Various filled PTFE compositions are available, such as FV 8515 (85% PTFE + 15% glass) and FBR 4060 (40% PTFE + 60% bronze), each offering different mechanical and thermal properties.
