Product catalog summary
Introduction
The document introduces the new POLISTAR product line by Diametal AG, designed to enhance the surface quality of grooved tools. This line leverages Diametal's 75 years of expertise, offering high-quality surfaces through fine abrasive grit sizes and a fast-cutting hybrid bond.

Industry Demands and Challenges
The industry demands high-quality surfaces for tools used in processing non-ferrous and light metals, as well as plastics. The challenge is achieving a surface quality of Ra <0.05, akin to a high-gloss polish, which traditional ultra-precision grinding wheels struggle to achieve.

POLISTAR Solution
The POLISTAR line addresses these challenges by combining ultrafine abrasive grit sizes with a fast-cutting hybrid bond, allowing for precise surface finishes. It supports a depth of cut between 0.2 to 0.5 mm and feed rates up to 150 mm/min, enhancing manufacturing dimensions and reducing rough grinding traces.

Product Features
POLISTAR products offer high cutting rates and profile stability, allowing extended use without re-profiling. They are primarily designed for oil cooling but are also effective with emulsion cooling.

Product Variants and Operating Parameters
Variants include Polistar, Polistar f, and Polistar ff, with finer options available if surface quality is inadequate. Basic operating parameters for Polistar include:
  • Vs = 30 m/s
  • ae = 0.15 – 0.5 mm
  • Vt varies with ae: 200 mm/min (ae 0.15), 100 mm/min (ae 0.30), 60 mm/min (ae 0.50)
For Polistar f and ff, Vt values should be reduced by 25% and 50%, respectively. SST No. 3 is recommended for sharpening.

More brilliant grinding with Polistar. The new POLISTAR product line guarantees high-quality surfaces for grooved tools. The finest abrasive grit sizes and a fast-cutting hybrid bond coupled with the 75 years of Diametal AG expertise makes this possible. The inquiries are steadily growing in number. Moreover, the demands of the industry processing non-ferrous and light metals as well as plasties are clear: the sur- faces of grooved tools that are precision ground before and afterwards have to satisfy the highest of require- ments. The challenge here is: how can it be effectively achieved that the milling or boring tools are produced in such a way that the spiral groove manifests a surface quality of Ra <0.05, i.e. practically high-gloss polished? As is well known, ultra-precision grinding wheels are generally only capable of mastering measurements of from around 20 to 50 microns. This is where Diametal comes in with POLISTAR. With the new product line, the narrow tolerance stipula- tions of a series production run can be observed. This is made possible thanks to a successful combination of ultrafine abrasive grit sizes, embedded in an extremely fast-cutting hybrid bond. In this way, spiral grooves can be brought to shine - and with a depth of cut of 0.2 to 0.5 mm. Nevertheless, feed rates in the region of 150 mm/min are still thoroughly feasible. The increase The POLISTAR products line is not only convincing in of the grinding allowance from a few hundredths of a terms of its cutting rate but also has an astonishing millimetre to up to 5 tenths of a millimetre consider- profile stability. The higher infeed depths also for use with oil cooling, but the solution with emulsion reduce the danger of rough grinding traces remaining cooling has also proved its worth, as many tests have when polishing. shown.
