Delphi Cylinder Deactivating Roller Finger Follower

Delphi Cylinder Deactivating Roller Finger Follower

Delphi Cylinder Deactivating Roller Finger Follower

Product catalog summary
Introduction
The Delphi Cylinder Deactivating Roller Finger Follower (DRFF) is an advanced technology designed to enhance engine efficiency by enabling cylinder deactivation. This system utilizes a rocker arm mechanism with a 3-lobe cam to switch between full- and zero-lift cam profiles, incorporating a deactivating rocker arm and an oil control valve for hydraulic actuation.
Specifications and Benefits
The DRFF system can improve fuel economy by 5% to 20% compared to conventional engines, with potential CO2 emission reductions of up to 20%. It allows for rapid cylinder deactivation at speeds up to 3500 rpm and can be integrated into existing cylinder heads with minimal modifications. The low mass of the DRFF ensures stable high-speed dynamics.
Availability
The DRFF and Oil Control Valve were targeted for production availability in early 2018, with engineering samples available to qualified manufacturers in 2016.
Applications
The DRFF is designed for overhead cam engines with hydraulic lash adjusters and roller finger followers, optimized for the Delphi-Tula Dynamic Skip Fire (DSF) Cylinder Deactivation System.
Performance Advantages
The compact size of the DRFF simplifies integration into existing engines. The Delphi-Tula DSF System, developed in collaboration with Tula Technologies, offers a dynamic solution for improved fuel economy through patented engine control software and advanced valve train technology.
The Delphi Advantage
With over 75 years of experience in valve train systems, Delphi provides high-quality products and comprehensive support, helping manufacturers meet emissions requirements and improve performance. Delphi's global presence and collaborative engineering approach offer high-value solutions tailored to automotive markets worldwide.

Delphi Cylinder Deactivating Roller Finger Follower-1

POWERTRAIN SYSTEMS Delphi Cylinder Deactivating Roller Finger Follower The Delphi Cylinder Deactivating Roller Finger Follower (DRFF) is an advanced variable valve actuation technology that enables cylinder deactivation during engine operation. The cylinder deactivation event is achieved through a rocker arm mechanism that works with a 3-lobe cam. The cam switches between full- and zero-lift cam profiles via corresponding rocker arm modes. The system includes a deactivating rocker arm (deactivation roller-slider finger follower) and an oil control valve (OCV) for hydraulic actuation. The DRFF and OCV can be implemented in engines employing traditional deactivation schemes on fixed cylinders for fuel economy improvement. Additionally, the valve train components are essential elements of the Delphi-Tula Dynamic Skip Fire (DSF) Cylinder Deactivation System. Cylinder deactivation significantly improves engine efficiency and reduces fuel consumption by firing fewer cylinders at lower torque loads to reduce pumping and heat losses. DSF takes cylinder Delphi’s Cylinder Deactivating Roller Finger Follower and Oil Control Valve deactivation a step further by firing each cylinder only as necessary during each engine revolution, depending on engine torque demand. DSF also reduces noise, vibration and harshness by choosing firing patterns that avoid vehicle and driver resonance frequencies. 5% to 20% fuel economy improvement compared with conventional spark ignition engines and depending on the engine implementation and driving conditions (upper range of fuel economy improvements require DSF); and the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 20% Fast response allows full cylinder deactivation in a single cam revolution at speeds up to 3500 rpm Compact packaging allows integration into existing cylinder heads with minimal modification Low mass DRFF delivers stable high speed dynamic behavior Availability Delphi’s Cylinder Deactivating Roller Finger Follower and Oil Control Valve are targeted to be available for production in early 2018.
