Measurements can be made in applications with limited optical access, such as internal combustion engines and gas turbines. For measurements in water through a window, the use of a single probe perpendicular to the window eliminates alignment problems due to refraction effects in the water. The probe is watertight and can be aligned when submerged. Description The probe has adjustable beams. This makes it possible to compensate for aberrations due to imperfect windows. The beams are expanded within the probe in order to obtain a small measurement volume. The five exiting beams form three fringe patterns allowing for measurement of all three velocity components. The small angle between the outer beams allows for measurements through small windows.
