ED520 Double Pole Single Throw

ED520 Double Pole Single Throw

Product catalog summary
Specifications:
The ED520 is a double pole single throw on/off switch designed for emergency disconnection of batteries or power supplies, particularly in battery-powered vehicles. It can handle a thermal current rating of 500A and has various intermittent current ratings depending on duty cycle (e.g., 915A at 30% duty). The switch can rupture overload currents of 750A at 60V D.C. and is recommended for use with a maximum contact voltage of 60V D.C. The typical voltage drop per pole across new contacts at 100A is between 20-50mV. The mechanical mean time between failures (M.T.B.F) is greater than 10,000 cycles, and it operates in ambient temperatures ranging from -40˚C to +60˚C. The contactor weighs 1800 grams, with an additional 20 grams if auxiliary contacts are included.
Auxiliary Details:
The auxiliary thermal current rating is 15A, with switching capabilities of 15A at 24V D.C., 10A at 48V D.C., and 5A at 96V D.C. Recommended connection sizes for maximum continuous current include a copper busbar of 322mm².
Options and Features:
The ED520 offers various optional features such as auxiliary contacts, magnetic blowouts, mounting brackets, closed contact housing, and environmental protection (IP66). Some features are standard, while others are optional or not available.
Usage and Precautions:
The ED520 is intended for emergency use to rupture current or as a no-load isolator and should not be used as a regular on-load switching device. It is manually operated with a snap action for opening and closing contacts and can be easily installed using main terminal busbars or M5 posidrive mounting screws.
Application in Electric Vehicles:
Battery disconnecting switches like the ED520 are crucial for safety in electric vehicles, providing a means to disconnect the battery in emergencies such as electrical faults or vehicle malfunctions. In many regions, it is mandatory to have such devices installed.

ED520 Double Pole Single Throw-1

ED520 Double Pole Single Throw On/Off (Part of the Emergency/Combined Disconnect Series) The ED520 range of switches have been designed to provide a rapid means of disconnecting batteries or other power supplies in the event of serious electrical faults. Whilst the switches are primarily intended for use with battery powered vehicles they are also suitable for use with static power systems. All types are capable of safely rupturing full load battery currents in the event of an emergency. • Uninterrupted current - no or infrequent load switching requirements (maintains a lower contact resistance). The ED520 is a manually operated device with a snap action for both opening and closing of the main contacts. The ED520 is easy to install (see drilling details) and can be mounted using the main terminal busbars or secured with supplied M5 posidrive mounting screws on the frame of the device. Precautions: The switch is to be used to rupture current in an emergency or as a no-load isolator. Do not use as a regular On-Load Switching Device. The Use of Battery Disconnecting Switches in Electric Vehicles Modern battery powered electric vehicles are inherently very reliable and safe. However, even when sophisticated electronic controllers are used it is desirable to have a means of disconnecting the battery in the event of an emergency, such as a vehicle failing to stop or an electrical short circuit. In many countries it is mandatory to fit one or more devices to achieve an emergency disconnection of the battery. Uninterrupted Current Performance data provided should be used as a guide only. Some de-rating or variation from figures may be necessary according to application Thermal current ratings stated are dependant upon the size of conductor being used For further technical advice email: [email protected] Albright reserve the right to change data without prior notice Albright International Ltd, Evingar Trading Estate, Ardglen Road, Whitchurch, Hampshire, RG28 7BB, UK Tel: +44 (0)1256 893060, Fax: +44 (0)1256 893562, Dedicated Sales Tel: +44 (0)1256 890030, Fax: +44 (0)1256 890043 E-mail: [email protected] or [email protected] Web Site: www.albrightinternational.com Copyright © 2015 Albright International Ltd
