Product catalog summary
Company Overview
Cross & Morse, established in 1984 from the merger of T.D. Cross and Morse Chain, has a long history in the power transmission industry. Initially focusing on bicycle components, the company expanded into roller chain sprockets and gearing. In 1987, production was centralized in Birmingham, and the company expanded into markets like food processing and pharmaceuticals. Cross & Morse is ISO 9001 certified, emphasizing continuous improvement.
Gear Products
Cross & Morse offers a wide range of standard and custom-designed gears. Standard stock includes bevel and mitre gears, spur gears, and straight racks, all made from medium carbon steel. Bevel and mitre gears provide right-angle drives with reduction ratios up to 4:1. Spur gears range from 1 Mod. to 6 Mod. pitch, available in steel and cast iron. Straight racks are designed for efficient rotary to linear motion conversion.
Custom Gear Solutions
For non-standard applications, Cross & Morse provides custom gear manufacturing, including mitre and bevel gears up to 250mm diameter, spur gears up to 730mm diameter, and helical gears with helix angles up to 45˚. Custom gearboxes can be designed for specific requirements, supporting shaft centers up to 1.5 meters and power ratings up to 1000KW.
Design and Selection Guidelines
Bevel gear design considers power, shaft speeds, and drive ratios. The document includes tables for design power in kW for a 10,000-hour life, recommending induction hardening for increased durability. Proper selection involves calculating design power, determining drive ratios, and selecting appropriate gearsets. Installation requires counteracting end thrust with adequate bearings and ensuring accurate mounting. Lubrication is crucial, with oil splash lubrication preferred for efficiency.
Power Rating Tables
The document provides power rating tables for metric and imperial series gears, detailing power capabilities across various speeds and ratios. Induction hardening is recommended for selections with pitch line velocity over 5 m/s.
Specifications
The document lists gears with different diametral pitches and modules, specifying teeth number, pitch diameter, and other dimensions. Medium carbon steel is used for high strength and durability.
Procedures and Recommendations
Gears should be mounted on rigidly supported shafts with bearings for axial and radial loads. Shafts should intersect within ±0.025mm and be at right angles within ±5’ angle. Mounting distance should be accurate within +0.0/–0.05mm.
Standards and Norms
All gears are cut to a 20-degree pressure angle using the Gleason System, supplied in pairs for correct matching. Induction or flame hardening is optional for demanding applications.
Additional Services
Additional services include rebore, keyway, setscrew, and induction hardening for stocked gears. Custom orders are available for bevel and mitre gears up to 375mm in diameter.
Conversion Factors
Conversion factors are provided for length, weight, force, torque, power, and inertia.

The Company Cross & Morse was established in 1984 through the amalgamation of two long standing and well respected companies in the Power Transmission Industry, T.D.Cross and Morse Chain. T.D. Cross & Sons was founded in 1870 in Birmingham, concentrating in the production of bicycle components under the direction of the Cross family. They moved to the current factory site in 1950 and developed into production of a popular range of roller chain sprockets and gearing. The Morse Chain Company was founded in 1894 also for the manufacture of bicycles in Pennsylvania, U.S.A. The company moved into...
