Product catalog summary
Overview of Induction Skull Melting (ISM) Furnaces
Induction Skull Melting (ISM) is a metal melting process using a segmented, water-cooled copper vessel under vacuum or controlled atmosphere with an induction coil. This method eliminates the need for refractory lining, allowing for the melting of reactive metals and alloys in clean conditions. The magnetic field induces heat in the metal charge, promoting a homogeneous melt pool.

Key Components and Process
  • Copper Crucible: Water-cooled segments prevent electrical shorting and reduce heat loss.
  • Induction Coil: Produces a magnetic field that stirs the liquid metal, ensuring uniform alloy composition.
  • Skull Formation: A thin layer of metal remains frozen against the crucible, acting as thermal resistance.

Advantages of ISM over VASC
  • Material Flexibility: ISM can use various charge materials, reducing raw material costs.
  • Homogeneity: Stirring action ensures even distribution of alloying elements.
  • Consistent Skull Thickness: Results in better yield compared to VASC.

ISM Power Supply Features
  • High electrical efficiency (94-97%) due to a voltage-fed, series inverter.
  • Low harmonic content and high power factor (≥0.95).
  • Built-in deionized water system for reliability.
  • Single electronic board for simplified maintenance.

Furnace Designs
  • Single Chamber: Ideal for R&D, low cost, and flexible.
  • Tandem Chamber: High throughput with built-in redundancy.
  • Two Chamber Horizontal: Semi-continuous operation, no vacuum break needed.
  • Two Chamber Vertical: Robust design, requires pit and higher overhead clearance.

Alloys Melted with ISM
ISM furnaces can melt over 3,000 different alloys, including titanium-based, nickel-based, and other specialized alloys.

Conclusion
Consarc, as the exclusive licensee of the ISM technology, offers advanced furnace designs tailored to specific customer needs, ensuring efficient and cost-effective metal casting solutions.

Overview of Induction Skull Melting (ISM) Process:
The ISM process promotes uniform alloy composition and allows for the melting of complex alloys due to the intense stirring generated by the induction field. The stirring ensures homogeneity and even distribution of alloying elements.

Advantages of ISM over VASC:
1. Homogeneity: ISM's stirring promotes uniform alloy composition, unlike VASC, which struggles with homogeneity due to little or no stirring.
2. Skull Thickness: ISM maintains a consistent skull thickness, resulting in better yield compared to VASC, where skull thickness continuously increases.
3. Efficiency: ISM generates a skull weight of less than 10% of the initial charge weight, offering a substantially better yield.

Technical Specifications:
- The ISM process uses a copper crucible made of water-cooled segments.
- The magnetic field from the induction coil induces heat in the metal charge, causing it to melt and stir.
- The process can be used for casting with over-the-lip pouring or ingot production.

Power Supply and Equipment:
Consarc, in collaboration with Inductotherm Corporation, has developed solid-state power supplies tailored for ISM. These power supplies feature high electrical efficiency (94-97%), a high power factor, low harmonic content, and a built-in deionized water system for reliability.

Company Information:
Consarc Corporation is the exclusive worldwide licensee of the ISM technology, continuously improving and refining the process. They have developed correlations between materials, power levels, frequencies, and crucible diameters to enhance efficiency and reliability.

Induction Skull Melting Furnaces-2

ISM— The Process Induction Skull Melting ISM is a method of melting metals in a segmented, water-cooled copper vessel while under vacuum or controlled atmosphere using an induction coil. This is done metal-to-metal, without a refractory lining. The copper crucible is made up of water-cooled segments or “fingers.” The magnetic field produced by the coil, in effect, passes through the crucible to induce heat in the metal charge causing it to melt. The field also intensely stirs the liquid metal pool in the pattern shown in the diagram. The stirring promotes a very homogeneous melt pool and effectively...

Induction Skull Melting Furnaces-6

Advantages of Casting with ISM The ISM process has some inherent advantages over the Vacuum Arc Skull Casting (VASC) process that has traditionally been used in many titanium and reactive metal casting applications. The biggest advantage is in the flexibility of the charge material that can be used. A cylindrical electrode must be fabricated for use in the VASC furnace. A large amount of effort and expense goes into producing the electrode needed at the beginning of the process. Compacted sponge, other raw material, and alloying elements are compacted and welded together to form the electrode....
