SAE Grade 5 Recommended Bolt Torque Chart Summary
Specifications:- Diameter & Threads per Inch: Various sizes ranging from 1/4" to 1-1/2".
- Stress Area: Measured in square inches, varies with bolt size.
- Tensile Strength Minimum: 120 KSI for most sizes, 105 KSI for larger sizes (1-1/8" and above).
Procedures:- Proof Load: Provided in pounds, indicating the maximum load a bolt can withstand without permanent deformation.
- Clamp Load: The load in pounds that ensures the joint remains secure under operational conditions.
- Torque Values: Specified in foot-pounds for both dry and lubricated conditions. Lubricated values are generally lower due to reduced friction.
Recommendations:- Use specified torque values based on whether the bolt is lubricated or not.
- Do not reuse lock nuts to ensure joint integrity.
Additional Notes:- Torque values for 1-3/4" diameter bolts are the same as those for 1-1/2" diameter bolts.
