Product catalog summary
Introduction: The document discusses the validation of a new simulation tool designed to analyze the electrochemical and thermal performance of lithium-ion batteries, particularly for traction applications. The focus is on a multi-length scale approach to simulate a single lithium-ion pouch cell and extend it to a complex simulation involving multiple cells in a battery pack.
Specifications: The simulation tool is part of the STAR-CCM+® suite, specifically the Battery Simulation Module. It aims to simulate both the battery's performance and its cooling system, addressing the coupled behavior of the battery's operation and its thermal environment.
Procedures: The approach involves comparing simulation results with previously published experimental data to validate the tool's accuracy. The methodology is scalable, allowing for the simulation of entire battery packs.
Relevance: This tool is significant for industries focusing on battery technology, providing insights into battery performance and thermal management, which are critical for the development of efficient and reliable battery systems.
Authors and Affiliations: The paper is authored by Gaetan Damblanc, Steve Hartridge, Robert Spotnitz, and Kenta Imachi, affiliated with CD-adapco and Battery Design LLC.

Validation of a new simulation tool for the analysis of electrochemical and thermal performance of lithium ion batteries. Date: Publisher: Order on SAE Website: Validation of a new simulation tool for the analysis of electrochemical SAE Inte Thursday and thermal performance of lithium [1] Abstract: With the increasing focus on the use of lithium ion batteries for traction applications the ability to simulate electrochemical and thermal performance of such batteries is of great interest. This paper details a multi-length scale approach which is used to simulate a single lithium ion pouch cell and compare against some previously published experimental work. This approach is then extended and used as a building block to a much more complex simulation using multiple cells within a battery pack. This technology also simulates the cooling system performance and the inherent coupled behavior of the battery?s operation and its thermal environment.
