This special mining technique is used in many underground mines around the world. In block caving undercut and haulage levels are driven under the ore body, and funnel-shaped “drawbells” are excavated above the undercut. The ore body is drilled and blasted at undercut level. It replaces the batch approach with the continuous Rock Flow method. Rock Flow is achieved when there is continuous caving, removal from the drawpoint, breaking and conveying. The LHD at the drawpoint is replaced by a Rock Feeder. This device pushes the rock into the haulage access, where it drops onto a hard rock production conveyor. It is an outboard chain conveyor with a box-shaped profile and a capacity of at least 900 tonnes/h (992 tons/h). Worn parts can be replaced easily.
