Oil separators

Oil separators

Product catalog summary
Specifications:
The oil separators are constructed from steel pipes with adequate thickness, featuring steel flanges and covers. They are available in two series: 5520 with threaded connections and 5540 with solder connections, both made from EN 10277-3 11S Mn Pb 37 + C steel bar. The internal design is simple to ensure long-term, trouble-free operation. Metallic screens at the inlet and outlet reduce gas speed, facilitating oil separation from the refrigerant. A float-operated needle valve returns oil to the compressor crankcase, and a chamber collects metallic debris, held by a permanent magnet to prevent operational issues.
Applications:
These oil separators are classified as "Pressure vessels" under the Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC and are suitable for commercial refrigeration systems and civil/industrial conditioning plants using Group II refrigerants. They enhance compressor lubrication, maintain high condenser and evaporator performance, and reduce system noise by damping valve pulsations. Benefits include extended compressor life, improved system performance, and energy savings.
Construction:
Castel manufactures two types of oil separators: Series 5520, which can be maintained and replaced, and Series 5540, which are closed and require cutting for removal. Both types should be installed vertically in the discharge line between the compressor and condenser, with a check valve recommended to prevent refrigerant return during off cycles. Proper installation includes pre-charging with oil to avoid damage to the return float mechanism.
Installation:
Oil separators should be installed close to the compressor to operate at discharge temperature, avoiding shell chilling to prevent refrigerant condensation. Insulation or heating solutions may be necessary. The return line can connect to the compressor crankcase, suction line, or oil reservoir. A sight glass can be used to monitor oil flow.
Selecting the Size:
Selection involves matching the separator's inlet connection with the compressor's discharge diameter and ensuring refrigerant flow capacity aligns with working conditions. Gas speed should not exceed 0.5 m/s to prevent swirl phenomena. Table 3 provides guidance based on refrigerating capacity, refrigerant type, and working conditions.
Technical Data:
Tables 1 and 3 provide detailed technical data, including maximum differential pressure, oil addition, connection sizes, dimensions, weight, and refrigerant flow capacity for various conditions and refrigerants.

Oil separators-2

106 The body is manufactured from steel pipe of adequate thickness. Flanges and cover are also made of steel. Either threaded connections of separators series 5520 or solder connections of separators series 5540 are manufactured, machining, with steel bar EN 10277-3 11S Mn Pb 37 + C. The internal device is simple in order to assure a trouble-free long operation. Appropriate metallic screens, placed on the inlet and outlet, rapidly reduce gas speed, and create the conditions required for the separation of the oil from the refrigerant. A float operated needle valve, set on the bottom of the vessel,...
