The INNSE BERARDI Co. is one of the few suppliers in the world capable to produce and put into service machines studied and manufactured to assure the best quality and performances for this important kind of production. The machines for the rotor slotting have a powerful vertical head capable to operate with disk type cutters up to 1200 mm dia. with a power up to 137 kW.That main headstock moves on a saddle which slides on a bed parallel to the rotor axis. On the same saddle, beside the main headstock, moves a column on which an auxiliary horizontal spindle headstock slides vertically. This headstock has a milling spindle and protruding boring spindle, and can carry different attachments to perform the many operations to complete the rotor.The disk type cutters for the winding slots, haveinterchangeable cartridges with carbide inserts, indifferent positions in order to compete by the samebody the various shapes and phases of the cut. After a first roughing of the slot, the key grooves can be machined usually by end cutters. Special three spindle attachment on the auxiliary head allows the completing of the key slots in one pass. The slots machining, usually carried out in down milling, involves huge forces supported by the feeding gears. The hydrostatic feeding worm and racks system is determining for the stability of themilling cuts thanks to its stiffness and dampeningpower. A second attachment is dedicated to the inertia slots, which are cross positioned versus the rotor axis. Because the shape and the size of the slots, the machining is performed by a disk type cutter (approx. dia. 700 mm) fully plunging in the material for 200 mm depth or more. To avoid chatters, easily produced by this cutting method, the special attachment is designed with efficient spindle gears back lash removing system.On both shoulders of the rotor body are locatedventilation slots beginning on the shaft and extended on the shoulder. A third attachment supports the tool in the long protruding position required by that operation. Other attachments shall be used to finish the rotor. On the shafts of the steam turbines are machined shaped slots to fix the blades. The shapes of the slots have complex profile to mini- mize the stresses. Special finger type tools, today available also with carbide tips, can be used for the straight or round slots. But the machines are ready also for the use of disk or bell type milling tools according to the design of the fixtures and the relevant machining method. INNSE BERARDI Co. supplied machines with one column or two columns. On the last case are possible two columns in one bed located in one side of the rotor, or two beds one on each side, carrying one column each one. The solution usually is selected following the Customer needs.
