Tamper Resistant Receptacles
  • All 125 volt, 15 and 20 amp receptacles in dwelling units must be tamper resistant as per NEC® Article 406.11.
  • These receptacles are designed to prevent injuries, particularly in children, by incorporating internal mechanisms that limit access to energized components.
  • Applicable to all dwelling unit outlets, which include living, sleeping, cooking, and sanitation facilities.
  • Devices must have a 'TR' marking visible when installed without the cover plate.
Weather Resistant Receptacles
  • All 15 and 20 amp, 125 and 250 volt nonlocking receptacles must be weather resistant as per NEC® Article 406.8.
  • Designed for outdoor and damp locations, these receptacles withstand temperature variations, sunlight, and mechanical abuse.
  • Weather resistance enhances corrosion resistance, cold impact, UV and water exposure resistance, and aging effects.
  • Devices must have a 'WR' marking visible when installed.

What You Need to Know... New National Electrical Code Requirements WR For 2008 Tamper Resistant Receptacles All 125 volt, 15 and 20 amp receptacles shall be listed tamper resistant receptacles per NEC® Article 406.11, Tamper-Resistant Receptacles in Dwelling units. • It is estimated that 2,400 children are injured annually by electrical outlet related incidents. • Tamper Resistant receptacles incorporate internal mechanisms to limit access to energized internal components. • Dwelling units are a single unit, providing complete and independent living facilities for 1 or more persons, including permanent provisions for living, sleeping cooking and sanitation. • The new requirement applies to all dwelling unit outlets. • Listed devices are required to have a “TR” marking visible when installed without the cover plate. Weather Resistant Receptacles All 15 and 20 amp, 125 and 250 volt nonlocking receptacles shall be listed as weather resistant type per NEC® Article 406.8, Receptacles in Damp and Wet Locations. • Receptacles installed outdoors and other wet /damp locations are subject to demanding temperature variations, direct sunlight and unusual mechanical abuse than those in a typical dry environments. • Weatherproof covers do not offer complete environmental protection. • Weather resistance increases corrosion resistance, cold impact, resistance to ultraviolet and water exposure and effects of aging. • Damp locations include receptacles installed outdoors and locations requiring a weatherproof enclosure. • Listed devices are required to have a “WR” marking on the face visible when installed.
