These materials are recognized for their mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties, making them suitable for various industries such as construction and engineering.
Product Specifications
Marpet-a FS aPET: Known for transparency, impact strength, and chemical resistance, ideal for visual communications and safety equipment.
Marpet-g FS PETg: Offers a strong strength-to-weight ratio, optical clarity, and processability, suitable for sign and display applications.
Application Areas
Both Marpet-a FS and Marpet-g FS are versatile, used in signage, automotive, and industrial manufacturing. They provide high impact resistance and are easy to thermoform.
Specification & Performance
These materials exhibit high impact resistance, excellent optical clarity, and resistance to various chemicals and environmental factors.
Fabrication
Marpet sheets can be machined with standard tools without cooling, but overheating should be avoided. Protective films should remain on during machining.
Forming and Bonding
Marpet sheets can be cold-formed, hot line bent, and thermoformed. They can be bonded using adhesives or mechanically fastened.
Finishing and Cleaning
Marpet sheets can be polished and decorated. Cleaning should be done with appropriate agents to avoid damage.
Installation
Consideration of expansion behavior is crucial during installation. Marpet sheets can be cold-curved and installed in various settings.
Specifications and Procedures
  • Cutting and Machining: Use saws or mills for sheets thicker than 1.5 mm. Symmetrically bevelled shearing tools are recommended.
  • Sawing: Use hand saws with fine teeth or carbide-tipped circular saws. Band saws are suitable for curved shapes.
  • Drilling: Standard metalworking drills are suitable. Avoid oil/water emulsions or cutting oils.
  • Milling: Ensure good chip clearance and sharp cutters.
Forming Techniques
  • Cold Forming: Sheets can be cold curved with a minimum radius of 150 times the sheet thickness.
  • Hot Line Bending: Heat to 100°C using IR heaters.
  • Thermoforming: Form at 100 to 160°C, ensuring short heating times and rapid cooling.
  • Blow Moulding: Used for forming domes with air pressure and vacuum processes.
Bonding and Fastening
  • Adhesive Tape: Double-sided acrylic-based tapes are suitable for rapid bonding.
  • Adhesive Bonding Agents: Limited industrial adhesives for Marpet-a FS; solvent adhesives for Marpet-g FS.
  • Mechanical Fastening: Use screws with cylindrical heads, allowing for expansion and shrinkage.
Finishing Techniques
  • Polishing: Flame polishing and buffing with alkali-free pastes are recommended.
Decorating and Printing
Marpet sheets require cleaning before coating or printing. Standard screen printing equipment and UV cured inks can be used, but a clear lacquer coat is suggested to minimize abrasion.
Cleaning
Dust can be removed with a damp cloth or ionized air. Use non-abrasive detergents and avoid sharp tools or strong solvents.
Packaging and Storage
Sheets should be stored indoors, away from sunlight and heat sources, laid flat on a clean surface. Outdoor storage requires a reflective waterproof cover and ventilation.
Installation
Thermal expansion must be considered. A profile system is recommended for securing sheets, allowing for expansion.
Environmental Policy
Brett Martin is committed to minimizing environmental impact through efficient resource use and promoting recycling.
Responsibility of End User
Users must ensure materials and processes are suitable for their applications and comply with regulations.
Chemical Resistance
The document provides a detailed table of chemical resistance for Marpet FS PET, indicating which chemicals affect the material and to what extent.
Chemical Resistance Overview
The document categorizes chemical resistance into stable, conditionally stable, and unstable chemicals when in contact with PETg at different concentrations and temperatures.
Key Findings
  • Stable Chemicals: Acetic acid (up to 10%), ammonia (25%), and various salts show stability with PETg.
  • Conditionally Stable Chemicals: Amyl acetate and butyl acetate are conditionally stable.
  • Unstable Chemicals: Strong acids and bases like sulfuric acid (above 40%) are generally unstable with PETg.

Section 3 Specification & Performance MECHANICAL PROPERTIES The mechanical behaviour of Marpet FS PET is characterised especially by its modulus of elasticity and impact resistance. The modulus of elasticity is a measure of the rigidity or elasticity of a material. It denotes the relationship between the force exerted on the sheet in the tensile test and the resulting elasticity. The modulus of elasticity depends on the test conditions and temperature. Luminous beam Reflection Total transmission Direct light transmission Surface scattering Haze At room temperature elastic modulus is around 2400...

Section 3 Specification & Performance CHEMICAL RESISTANCE Chemicals can affect the strength, flexibility, surface appearance, colour, dimensions or weight of plastics. The basic modes of interaction which cause these changes are: • chemical attack on the polymer chain, with resultant reduction in physical properties • physical change, including absorption of solvents, resulting in softening and swelling of the plastic; • stress cracking from the interaction of an incompatible chemical. Other factors affecting chemical resistance include pressure and internal or external stresses, length of exposure,...

Fabrication GENERAL GUIDANCE Tools Marpet-a FS and Marpet-g FS sheets may be machined using standard tools used for metal and woodworking. Carbide-tipped tools are recommended. It is important to use sharp cutting tools with the correct angles. Cooling Cooling is not necessary during the normal machining of Marpet-a FS and Marpet-g FS sheets. If overheating does occur during machining the area should be cooled with water or compressed air. The use of oil emulsions and cutting oils is not recommended as these may contain chemicals to which aPET and PETg are not resistant and could result in stress...

Hand saws A standard hand saw with fine spacing between the teeth may be used to cut Marpet-a FS and Marpet-g FS sheets. When sawing by hand it is likewise better to use blades that are narrower and have more set. Circular saws A circular saw is the easiest way to cut Marpet-a FS and Marpet-g FS sheets. Carbide-tipped circular saw blades produce the cleanest cuts. The tooth pitch of the blade varies depending on sheet thickness (fine for thin sheets, too coarse for thicker materials). Remove swarf and shavings from the cutting surface to avoid potential damage to the protective film and sheets....

Marpet Product Guide-15

HINGE EFFECT Standard metal working drills are suitable for machining Marpet-a FS and Marpet-g FS. Ensure the drill bits are sharp. Cooling during drilling is generally not necessary. For large drilling depths use water or compressed air and/or regularly withdraw the drill from the hole to reduce heat and remove shavings. Marpet-a FS has a very high level of fatigue resistance, creating scope for a diverse range of hinge effects. By pressing with a blunt blade, pre-punching or milling, it is possible to create the bent edges that may be required on the inside. Sheets of up to 1.5 mm in thickness...
