Overview
The CBA-Series Scotch-Yoke Pneumatic Actuators are designed for automating quarter-turn valves such as ball, butterfly, and non-lubricated plug valves. These actuators are compact, lightweight, economical, and low maintenance, making them suitable for demanding automation needs. They are available in double-acting and spring-return models and are certified for water ingress protection under BS 5490: 1977- IP66 and IP67M.
Design and Construction
The actuators feature a scotch-yoke mechanism that transforms linear piston movement into a 90-degree rotation, providing optimal torque curves for quarter-turn valve applications. The housing is made of ductile iron, ensuring strength and corrosion resistance. Key components include PTFE/bronze bearings for smooth torque output, Xylan™ coated cylinders for abrasion resistance, and high-strength alloy steel center bars.
Operating Ranges
Double-acting models offer torque outputs up to 11,515 lb-in (1,301 Nm), while spring-return models provide spring ending torques up to 4,269 lb-in (482 Nm). Standard operating temperatures range from -20°F to +200°F, with options for high and low temperature trims. Operating pressures range from 40 to 150 PSIG (3 to 10 BAR).
Design Features
The actuators are designed with water ingress protection, outer lip-type torque shaft seals, O-ring sealed cylinders, and a standard accessory mounting pad. They offer a dual valve mounting interface, allowing flexibility in actuator fail mode without disassembly. A jackscrew option provides manual override capabilities.
Sizing and Selection
Actuator selection involves determining the type (double-acting or spring-return), power supply media (pneumatic or hydraulic), and supply pressure. The actuator's torque output must exceed the valve's torque requirements at all positions and directions of rotation. Performance data tables assist in ensuring the selected actuator meets the maximum operating pressure requirements.
Performance Data
The document provides detailed performance data for both double-acting and spring-return actuators, including torque ratings and operating pressures. The data is presented in both imperial and metric units, with specific models and their corresponding specifications listed.
General Definitions
Definitions for terms such as quarter-turn, position, stroke, cycle, and safety factor are provided to standardize terminology and assist in understanding actuator operations.
Torque Output Specifications- Double-Acting Actuators: The torque output is defined at three positions: start, minimum, and end. The start and end torque outputs are equal, representing the maximum torque during a pressure stroke. The minimum torque is the lowest value during the stroke.
- Spring-Return Actuators: These actuators use pressure and springs to produce torque. The start torque is the maximum output when the spring is fully compressed. The minimum torque is the lowest output during the stroke, and the end torque is the output when the spring is fully extended.
Torque Ratings- Torque ratings are provided for various models (CBA315, CBA420, CBA520, etc.) at different operating pressures, both in PSIG and Bar.
- Charts list start, minimum, and end torque outputs for each model and pressure level.
Dimensional Data- Dimensions are provided for both double-acting and spring-return actuators in both imperial and metric units.
- Dimensions include various parameters such as length, width, and connection sizes for each actuator model.
Notes- All published torques are typical minimum values.
- Dimensional drawings are not certified and are available upon request.

SIL-PAC™ Solution
The SIL-PAC solution offers a comprehensive hardware and documentation package compliant with IEC, ISA, and OSHA standards for SIL applications. It includes a Failure Modes and Effects Diagnostics Analysis (FMEDA) report for SIL suitability and can be combined with other components like solenoid valves and switches. The package supports partial stroke testing and continuous monitoring when integrated with Fisher’s TÜV-certified FIELDVUE® DVC controller.
Bettis Automated Packages
Bettis provides complete packages for final valve control, integrating CBA actuators with necessary controls and selected valves. These packages are suitable for large international projects and can be integrated with Emerson automation solutions.
BettiSystems™
Bettis offers pre-engineered control systems using standard components to reduce lead times and simplify processes. These systems are documented and approved for common requirements.
M3/M3HW Jackscrew Manual Override
This device provides a mechanical advantage for manual override, available for all CBA models with or without a handwheel. It ensures full torque output if air supply is lost.
BettiStop™ Partial Stroke Test Device
This device is used for testing Emergency Shutdown valves while in service, complying with ANSI/ISA S84.01, OSHA CFR 1910.119, and IEC 61508/61511 standards. It limits valve stem rotation to 20 degrees standard or 15 degrees optionally.
Options and Features
Optional features include fail-safe operation, various trim options for different environmental conditions, and specific configurations for fail "CW" or "CCW" operations. Examples of model designations for spring-return and double-acting actuators are provided.
