MMB Accelerates Corporate Growth with Robust Information Management Strategy - 1

CASE STUDY Project Summary Organization: Mott MacDonald Bentley Location: Leeds, United Kingdom Project Objective: • Integrate ProjectWise and OpenPlant PID to bring rigor to the management of BIM data for over 500 water industry projects. • Implement a reusable digital component catalogue accessible to users of varying software platforms. • Create a connected data environment aligned with Mott MacDonald’s “Common Way of Working.” • Streamline process engineering from design through commissioning. Products used: ProjectWise and OpenPlant PID Fast Facts • MMB used ProjectWise as the cornerstone for information management, creating a digital components that optimized design processes and saved costs. • OpenPlant PID streamlined process engineering from design through commissioning and facilitated cross-pollination of P&ID datasets. ROI • ProjectWise and OpenPlant PID enhanced the management of BIM project information helping MMB improve productivity and accelerate corporate growth. • Using the digital components catalogue standardized MMB’s content management strategy, optimizing consistency and efficiency of BIM deliverables. • Working in a connected data environment significantly reduced project start-up time and allowed MMB to capitalize on the expertise and resources of the Mott MacDonald global group to cut design costs by 50 percent. MMB Accelerates Corporate Growth with Robust Information Management Strategy Bentley Software Provides Integrated BIM Management Solution for Over 500 Water Industry Schemes Embracing Information Management Emerging as the leading design-build organization in the UK water sector, Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) was established in 1999 as a joint venture between global consulting giant Mott MacDonald and privately held civil engineering and construction company, JN Bentley. In 2014 Mott MacDonald acquired Bentley Holdings, including the JN Bentley subsidiary, providing MMB additional resources to further enhance project delivery while maintaining a shared culture. Recognized for its approach to driving quality and value by embracing a BIM methodology, process improvements, collaborative workflows, and flexible program management, MMB provides integrated, efficient service to all clients. Having completed over 500 water projects, with all technical project information authored, managed, and shared in ProjectWise®, MMB has enhanced efficiency and decreased design costs, yielding steady corporate growth. To accelerate its success, MMB realized that it required a step change in its information management strategy. The organization selected to integrate ProjectWise with OpenPlant PID to implement technology solutions for optimal information management and improved productivity. Digital Components Catalogue Optimizes Efficiency standardized approach to objects optimized consistency and efficiency in BIM deliverables. On a recent project designing and constructing the Roebuck Service Reservoir for Yorkshire Water, MMB’s onsite construction team experienced conditions different from those anticipated in the design process. This required a fundamental design change expecting to take up to two weeks. Having access to a wealth of intelligent components in the DCC allowed the design change to be completed in a matter of hours, with revised, approved drawings issued via ProjectWise to the site later that same day. The availability of well-structured data in ProjectWise saved significant time and more than GBP 20,000 in onsite costs for the project. The DCC is also a core enabler of Mott MacDonald’s Carbon Portal supporting environmental sustainability, expecting to help the organization exceed the UK’s Government Construction 2025 carbon reduction target of 50 percent. The Carbon Portal is an in-house assessment and optioneering tool for all sectors, including water, used across all regions to assess capital and operational carbon in projects to help cut carbon and costs. All content in the DCC is assigned a unique carbon ID allowing MMB to match information contained within its models with the company’s carbon databases. As part of its new information management strategy, MMB MMB continues to add needed to create a reusable content from additional digital library of high quality water projects using components that supported MMB’s “Common Way of Working” allowed for ProjectWise as a solid users of different software rapid deployment of predefined templates to platform for its DCC. Coupled platforms. The project team projects around the globe. with the use of a connected relied on the interoperability data environment, the DCC of ProjectWise to serve as the cornerstone for its approach facilitates MMB’s global information management strategy and established a digital components catalogue (DCC) with and is expected to add long-term value to the business over 4,000 water-specific, reusable BIM objects accessible serving thousands of international users
