The ampliTex® Art. No. 5027-4 is a UD tape constructed from a blend of flax and carbon fibers, with a yarn tex of 200 TEX and a surface weight of 170 gsm. The composition is 51% flax and 49% carbon, with textured polyester used as the weft yarn.
The standard width of the tape is 120 mm, and it is available in rolls of 50 meters.
The composite material exhibits a flexural modulus of 66.6 GPa, strength of 730 MPa, and yield strength of 642 MPa, with a density of 1340 kg/m3. These measurements are based on specimens made by vacuum infusion using 7 layers of fabric and resin 5052 from Huntsman, with a fiber volume fraction of 50%.
The ampliTex® UD tape offers a combination of high stiffness from carbon and lightweight damping from flax. The fibers are compatible due to similar thermal expansion coefficients and failure strains.
The tape is compatible with epoxy and polyester resins and various processing methods such as vacuum infusion, RTM, wet layup, BIM, and compression molding. Flax fibers may contain humidity, which can affect resin polymerization; drying the fabric at 110°C for 15 minutes is recommended. A fiber weight fraction of 50% can be achieved with process pressure over 5 bars, and resin content should be controlled between 50-60% by weight.
Flax used in the product is sourced from France and Belgium, contributing to a negative global warming indicator due to CO2 sequestration. Comparisons with glass fibers show lower human toxicity, greenhouse gas emissions, and non-renewable energy consumption for ampliTex flax.
