Product catalog summary
Fabric Construction
The ampliTex® 5051 flax braid is constructed from flax fibers sourced from the EU, with a fiber TEX of 66. It has a nominal diameter of 43 mm and can stretch to a maximum internal diameter of 58 mm. The linear weight at nominal diameter is 33.6 g/m, and the wall areal weight is 250 gsm.
Measurements
The standard roll length for this product is 100 meters.
Product Description
This flax fiber braid is designed for manufacturing high-performance, environmentally friendly composite tubes.
Performance Advantage
The flax braid can replace a 50.8 g/m glass fiber braid, offering a lower density of 1350 kg/m3 compared to glass fibers.
Technical Specifications
  • Tensile Properties: Modulus parallel to fibers is 61 GPa (dry) and 34.6 GPa (composite); strength parallel to fibers is 580 MPa (dry) and 329 MPa (composite).
  • Flexural Properties: Modulus parallel to fibers is 57 GPa (dry) and 32.6 GPa (composite); strength parallel to fibers is 663 MPa (dry) and 377 MPa (composite).
Composite properties are measured with 54% fiber volume using Epoxy resin Araldite LY 8615/ XB 5173.
Ecological Aspects
Flax is grown in France and Belgium, contributing to a negative global warming indicator due to CO2 sequestration. Compared to glass fibers, ampliTex flax has lower human toxicity, greenhouse gas emissions, and non-renewable energy consumption.
Processing Guidelines
  • Compatible with epoxy and polyester resins.
  • Near zero CTE, compatible with carbon fibers.
  • Suitable for infusion-based processes, wet layup, bladder inflation molding, and compression molding.
  • Flax fibers contain humidity; dry fabrics at 110°C for 15 minutes if necessary.
  • Achieve 50% fiber weight fraction with process pressure > 5 bars; control resin amount during lamination.
