Bausch Datacom nv/sa has developped a 19" modem rack system based on the Proxima modem technology. High performance and reliability are the key features of this Proxima modem technology. However ... even the best modem sometimes "hangs". A Modem Management System - MMS - was integrated in the Proxima Rack. The MMs contains a backplane whitch fits in the 19" rack. To this backplane 18 Modem Management Interfaces - MMI - are connected, so each MMI has its own Proxima rack modem to control. To control all the functions of the MMS a Modem Management Unit - MMU - has been developped. The network manger controls the MMS via the MMU through a serial terminal port which can be connected to a modem or a terminal server. The MMU is controlled with simple ASCII commands and result codes.
