Applications AUMA GSI part-turn gearboxes are used in nuclear power plants for the automation of part-turn valves. For this purpose they are combined with an AUMA SAN or SAI actuator or with any other multi-turn actuator which has been qualified accordingly. Part-turn valves include, for example, butterfly valves or ball valves. The gearboxes are certified according to IEEE 382-1996. They are qualified for use in outside and inside containment applications. Due to their wide torque range, their modular design and potential for use with electric multi-turn actuators, the gearboxes can be used...

Quality is not just a matter of trust 18 Solutions for a world in motion This brochure will provide both the beginner and the expert with an overview of the functions and applications of AUMA GSI part-turn gearboxes. It can be used as the basis to determine whether a device is suitable for the chosen application. For detailed product selection refer to the separate data sheets, dimension sheets and price lists. The quotation specialists in our Muellheim headquarters can help you find the correct device for the application. Since the mid-1970s, AUMA has been producing devices for the use in nuclear...

Modular design/versions Modular concept – different applications Valves in nuclear power plants are used in areas with different safety relevance (outside containment and inside containment), but also in conventional areas. They are available in many designs and different sizes. Butterfly valves, ball valves or dampers with diameters ranging from a few centimetres to several metres are to be opened or closed and controlled electrically. AUMA meets the various requirements with their modular product range. GS and GSI part-turn gearboxes are central elements of this product range. The GS range...

RR RL [3a] [3b] LR [1] LL [2] [3c] [3d] [4] [1] and [2] Part-turn actuator as combination of part-turn gearbox with multi-turn actuator Torques up to 24,000 Nm. The combination of an SAI multi-turn actuator [1] with a GSI worm gearbox or of an SAN multi-turn actuator [2] with a GSI worm gearbox form a part-turn actuator. The gearbox input of the worm gearbox includes a mounting flange for the actuator. The multi-turn actuator is mounted with a screw connection to the gearbox which can easily be removed for maintenance purposes. The flange connection between multi-turn actuator meets the requirements...

Design principle [8] [1] [2] [7] [6] [3] [5] [7] [4] [1] Housing The housing is made of spheroidal cast iron GJS-400-15. This material is resistant to extreme vibrations caused e.g. by an earthquake or an airplane crash. [2] Gearing Principal item is the worm gearing enabling a high reduction ratio within a single stage. [3] End stops The internal end stops limit the swing angle. The significant advantage of the AUMA design is that only the comparatively low input torque acts on the end stops, not the high output torque. Thereby a high level of safety against damage due to overload is assured...

Service conditions Devices for use in nuclear power plants have to remain fully operable, not only under normal operation, but also under DBE conditions. During comprehensive testing the devices have to withstand the most extreme loads and conditions. Qualification of the gearboxes in accordance with IEEE 382-1996 The following test was performed and passed. Functional tests are performed between the individual test stages. Test steps Thermal ageing 700 h at 100 °C Mechanical ageing OPEN-CLOSE duty 2,000 cycles with a swing angle of 90°, whereof 80° with 50 % of the maximum torque and 10° with...

Enclosure protection Ambient temperatures IP 68-6-D The specified values are also valid for high humidity (> 95 %). According to EN 60 529, the conditions to fulfil enclosure protection IP 68 are not defined. For enclosure protection IP 68-6-D, AUMA has agreed the following with the users: The gearboxes are dust and water tight up to a maximum of 6 m head of water. Normal operation ■ – 25 °C to + 80 °C DBE conditions ■ up to + 185 °C for a short period Corrosion protection/Colour Corrosion protection KI This corrosion protection was specially developed for AUMA devices used in nuclear power plants....

Functions The basic function of the GSI part-turn gearboxes is to decrease the input torque required at the valve by means of a reduction ratio. The demands on the device are high and clearly stipulated in the corresponding standards, e.g. IEEE 382. The gearboxes have to operate reliably over the entire planned operation time of the power plant and even under DBE conditions. Furthermore installation and commissioning should be easy and the maintenance requirements low. Revision work and inspections can be quickly and easily performed and therefore standstill times are considerably reduced. The...

Simple and precise setting of the end positions Setting an end position The swing angle of the gearbox is generally set in the factory to the swing angle required on site, i.e. the swing angle between valve position OPEN and CLOSED may not be changed. During commissioning, only one end stop has to be set; the other end stop will automatically be set via the preset swing angle. High safety against fracture Due to the special AUMA design, the gearboxes have a high end stop strength, which is several times the maximum input torque. The end stops therefore provide a high degree of protection against...
