Product catalog summary
Product Description
The Protector™ is a collision sensor designed to prevent damage to robotic end-effectors during crashes. It features automatic reset, high repeatability, and a robust design, making it a cost-effective solution for minimizing downtime and eliminating the need for human intervention. The device is tested for millions of cycles without failure.
Product Advantages
  • High Repeatability: Resets to within 0.001 inches of its original position after a collision.
  • Generous Range of Motion: Allows for large distances of compliance during crashes, giving the robot controller time to react.
  • Energy Absorption: A pneumatic chamber absorbs impact energy, protecting tooling from damage.
  • Consistent Break-away Response: Similar response at a given pressure, regardless of crash type.
  • Convenient Mounting Surfaces: Threaded and through-hole mountings for flexibility.
  • Cost-effective: Strong and reliable, enhancing manufacturing productivity affordably.
Protector Features
  • Automatic Reset: Self-resets after a crash, eliminating the need for manual intervention.
  • Optional Spring for Two Trip Points: Allows for different break-away points using air pressure and optional springs.
  • Quick-Response Crash Detection: Configurable 2-wire circuit with a Brad Harrison connector to avoid nuisance tripping.
  • Robust Design: Made with hardened tool steel for durability.
  • Environmental Protection: Optional boots to prevent coolant or debris ingress.
  • Optional Interface Plates: Available for custom or blank configurations.
Model Selection and Specifications
To select a Protector model, consider static, dynamic, and working forces. Calculate applied loads using provided formulas and select a model with a nominal moment and torque rating above the combined loads. Determine the required pressure setting using the formula P = PM + PT + PF, where PM, PT, and PF are pressure components related to moment, torque, and force loads. Specifications for models SR-61 to SR-221 include angular and torsional displacement, axial displacement, maximum air pressure, weight, and break-away loads.
Ordering Information
Models are available with various options such as weld spatter shields, coolant protection boots, and different interface plates. Contact ATI for assistance with model selection.
Additional Products
  • Robotic/Automatic Tool Changer: High-precision device with a patented fail-safe locking mechanism.
  • Robotic Deburring Tools: Air-driven tools for automated deburring applications.
  • Multi-Axis Force/Torque Sensor: Measures six components of force and torque.
  • Robotic Rotary Joint: Allows unlimited rotation of end-of-arm tooling.
  • Automated Assembly Alignment Device: Uses Remote Center Compliance technology for automatic alignment.

How to Select a Protector Model For a successful application, the Protector must be sized appropriately. Contact ATI at 919-772-0115 for assistance with model selection or use the following information. To select the correct model, you must consider all forces acting on the Collision Sensor: Static, Dynamic, and Working forces, produced by the end-of-arm tooling while performing its intended task. Once a specific model is selected, the nominal pressure setting for the break-away point must be determined. The required air pressure setting must be readily available with ample range. For example,...
