Product catalog summary
Introduction
This document focuses on functional safety solutions in solenoid valves, emphasizing safety loops, final elements, redundancy, and safety products. It highlights the importance of reliable solenoid valves in maintaining safety in process installations, adhering to IEC61508 and 61511 standards.
Safety Loop
The safety loop comprises a sensing element, logic solver, and final element, working together to ensure a process is brought to a safe state. Solenoid valves are crucial in controlling actuators and ensuring safety by moving valves to safe positions when necessary.
Final Element
The final element includes a solenoid valve, actuator, and process safety valve. The reliability of solenoid valves is critical, requiring high manufacturing standards and rigorous testing. The probability of failure on demand (PFD) is a key metric, necessitating frequent testing to maintain reliability.
Redundancy with Solenoid Valves
Redundancy can be achieved using two solenoid valves in series (1oo2 configuration) or parallel (2oo2 configuration). The 1oo2 configuration increases reliability but decreases availability, while the 2oo2 configuration increases availability but decreases reliability. ASCO offers a specific 2oo2 configuration that enhances reliability.
Safety Products
  • Single Solenoid Valves: Certified for SIL 3 safety loops, widely used in the process industry, and configurable for redundancy.
  • Manual Reset Valves: Used for manual engagement of control elements, available in electrically tripped and no-voltage release versions.
  • Redundant (Coil) Solenoid Valves: Designed with two independent coils for increased reliability, used in high availability applications.
Safety Systems
  • Bypass Panels: Allow manual testing of solenoid valves without removing air supply, reducing maintenance time.
  • Actuator Control Systems (ACS): Provide reliable and durable connections for air-controlled safety shutdown valves.
  • Redundant Control Systems (RCS): Offer features like automatic online testing and partial stroke testing, certified for SIL 3 applications.
Terminology
The document includes a glossary of terms related to functional safety, such as actuator, availability, dangerous failure, and safety integrity level (SIL).
Online Configurator Tool
ASCO provides an online configurator tool to simplify the selection process of RCS products. This tool allows users to construct and interpret catalogue numbers for solenoid valves.
Specifications and Features
The configurator highlights appropriate construction features based on the input catalogue number, ensuring accuracy in product selection by accepting only valid constructions.
Usage Procedure
Users can access the configurator online, enter a catalogue number, select features, and view detailed product information, including attributes and drawings.
Support and Contact Information
ASCO offers support through phone and email for any questions regarding the configurator or product selection.

Safety is reality and is part of our daily business. The same applies to ASCO; it is reality and part of your safety. You can rely on our focus on reliable products. Our solenoids in your process installation give you a higher degree of safety. The standards IEC61508 and 61511 state: ‘Functional safety is part of the overall safety that depends on a system or equipment operating correctly in response to its inputs.’ This applies not only to a new installation but continues over the full service life or ‘safety lifecycle’. With our solenoid valves for air operated safety valves we have created...

REDUNDANCY WITH SOLENOID VALVES Two solenoid valves can be used to operate process or shutdown valves. In this full redundancy mode either reliability or availability of the final element can be increased depending on the piping configuration. Reliability is related to the integrity of the safety loop to perform its safety function, where availability is related to the production to maintain its function. Two solenoid valves connected in series as shown in figure 1 are operated in a 1oo2 voting by the logic solver. This increases the reliability (or PFD) of the system. At the same time however,...

Single solenoid certified solenoid valves Manual reset valves SAFETY SOLUTIONS ASCO has dedicated solutions to operate your safety valve with a high degree of integrity. We have three standard types of safety products for basic installations: single solenoid valves, manual reset valves and redundant (coil) solenoid valves. For more advanced installations, we have developed three different safety systems: bypass panels, actuator control systems and redundant control systems. SAFETY PRODUCTS 1. SINGLE SOLENOID VALVES 2. MANUAL RESET VALVES When you need to manually engage the final control element...

Redundant Solenoid Valves Redundant Coil Solenoid Valves Bypass Panels 3. REDUNDANT (COIL) SOLENOID VALVES To increase the integrity of the solenoid valve operation ASCO has designed a valve construction that is operated with two independent coils. Configured in 1oo2 voting, the safety valve is operated if one of the two coils is de-energised. This 1oo2 configuration highly increases the reliability or integrity. Configured in 2oo2 voting, both coils must be de-energised to return the actuator/ process valve to its non-operating position. Redundant coil solenoid SAFETY SYSTEMS valves in this...
