Principle of Operation

The EOQ-BBO series Pockels cells are transverse field devices with a low electro-optical coefficient, resulting in high operating voltages. The quarter-wave voltage is proportional to the ratio of electrode spacing and crystal length. Smaller aperture devices have lower quarter-wave voltage, but even 3mm aperture devices have a quarter-wave voltage of 3.4KV at 1064nm. A double crystal design reduces required voltages and allows operation in half-wave mode with fast switching times.

Application

BBO is a preferred electro-optic material for high average power Pockels cell applications due to its laser power handling abilities, temperature stability, and freedom from piezoelectric ringing. The electro-optic effect ensures fast switching times, and the wide transparency range allows diverse applications.
