Product catalog summary
Product Overview
Arnokrome™ III is a ductile permanent magnet alloy developed by The Arnold Engineering Company. It is based on the iron-chromium-cobalt alloy system and offers price stability due to its lower cobalt content compared to alternative magnetic alloys. The alloy is known for its good castability and ductility, allowing for a variety of product sizes and shapes.

Manufacturing and Properties
Arnokrome III can be sand cast into various shapes, machined, and formed before magnetic heat treatment. Its magnetic properties can be tailored through heat treatment to meet specific permanent magnet requirements. The alloy is isotropic, with coercive force adjustable between 50 and 300 oersteds.

Key Considerations
  • Magnetic Characteristics: Best suited for low coercivity applications with Br = 11,000 gauss and Hc = 50 - 300 oersteds.
  • Workability: Machinable by normal methods before heat treatment; post-treatment, only grinding is recommended.
  • Cost: Lower coercivities are less expensive due to shorter heat treat cycles.

Chemical Composition
  • Chromium: 26 - 30%
  • Cobalt: 7 - 10%
  • Iron: Balance

Physical Properties
  • Density: 0.277 lbs/cu in (7.6 g/cc)
  • Electrical Resistivity: 69 x 10-6 ohm-cm (25°C)
  • Thermal Conductivity: 0.05 cal/sq cm/cm/sec/°C (100°C)
  • Thermal Expansion: 8.67 x 10-4 cm-cm-1-°C-1 (30° to 100°)

Mechanical Properties
  • Tensile Strength: 75,000 psi (solution heat treated), 120,000 psi (heat treated)
  • Yield Strength: 50,000 psi (solution heat treated), 115,000 psi (heat treated)
  • Elongation: 25% (solution heat treated), 6% (heat treated)
  • Hardness: Rb 75 (solution heat treated), Rc 25 (heat treated)

Magnetic Properties
  • Magnetic Remanence: 9,000 - 12,000 gauss
  • Coercivity: 50 - 300 oersteds
  • Energy Product: 0.4 - 1.2 MGOe
  • Curie Temperature: 625°C

Cast Arnokrome III-1

Cast Arnokrome™ Product Information Arnokrome™ III, developed by The Arnold Engineering Company, is a ductile permanent magnet alloy based on the iron-chromium-cobalt alloy system. Since the cobalt content is lower than in alternative magnetic alloys, Arnokrome may offer a significant advantage in replacement situations in terms of price stability. The alloy has both good castability and ductility which permits the manufacture of a wide variety of product sizes and shapes. Arnokrome III may be sand cast into a variety of shapes, then machined and formed prior to magnetic heat treating. By adjusting the heat treatment, the alloy's magnetic properties can be tailored to specific permanent magnet requirements. Arnokrome III is isotropic. By controlled heat treatment, coercive force is varied to specific levels between 50 and 300 oersteds to optimize customer's application. Arnold Engineering's applications personnel are available to provide technical assistance in the user's evaluation of Arnokrome. Arnokrome III can be supplied in most shapes available in Alnico products. When choosing Arnokrome, the following factors • Magnetic characteristics: Arnokrome III is best suited for low coercivity applications. • Workability: Arnokrome III is machinable by normal methods prior to magnetic heat treatment. After heat treatment, only • Cost: Due to the nature of the heat treat cycle required to develop magnetic characteristics, the lower coercivities are less expensive. Higher coercivity requires a longer heat treat cycle. Arnokrome™ III is an excellent substitute for Vicalloy, Cunife, and cobalt steels in many Contact your Arnold Sales Representative or call Arnold directly For information on Arnold's complete line of products, visit our website at Cast Arnokrome III is machinable with standard metal-working tools.
