Orbital Welding of "Pulled-Tee" Type Joints - 1

The widest range of orbital welding equipment in the world Arc Machines has developed tooling for the orbital welding of pulled-tee type joints for the manufacturing of tees, manifolds or other components requiring this type of transition weld. A tube stub, sanitary ferrule or other similar fitting may be welded directly to the “pull”. AMI’s tooling is used in conjunction with our line of Model 8 and some Model 9E series weld heads, and will accommodate pulled (branch) sizes from 0.50” (12,7 mm) through 7.00” (177,8 mm) OD, in wall thicknesses up to 0.160” (4 mm). Tooling for this application includes an adjustable-angle or extended electrode holder, a cylindrical gas seal sized to fit the “run” diameter, and a clamp insert sized to fit the “branch” tube or Fitting Support Mandrel, to provide exceptional shielding gas coverage. A welder mounts the Model 9ER-4500 weld head in place for welding a 2” (50,8 mm) branch tube, pulled from an 8” (203,2 mm) run. “PULLED-TEE” TYPE JOINTS Short ferrules welded onto a manifold. Close-up of sanitary “pulled-tee” weld. Short sanitary ferrule welded to 4” (101,6 mm) pulled branch from a 4” (101,6 mm) run. Branch tubes welded with flanges in place.

SET-UPS The left two drawings depict a weld head set-up to weld a tube stub or a fitting to the “pull”. The drawing on the right depicts branch spacing requirements for manifold applications. The “branch” tube or fitting must be tack-welded to the “pull” before installing the weld head. The chart below can be used as a guide to the required stick-out and branch spacing dimensions. BRANCH SPACING DIMENSIONS Weld Head Model 8-2000 Model 9E-2500 Model 8-4000 Model 9ER-4500 Model 9E-7500 Branch Diameter Capacity 0.50” - 1.00” 12 - 26 mm 0.50” - 2.00” 12 - 51 mm 1.00” - 3.00” 25 - 76 mm 1.00” -...
