Product catalog summary
Ball-Bearing Component Maintenance
Maintenance is essential for optimal performance of ball-bearing components. Use Lamina Ball-Lube® for lubrication and Ball-Scrubb® for cleaning. BALL-SCRUBB® removes dirt and grease, while BALL-LUBE® protects against wear and oxidation.
Ball-Bearing Operating Data & Design Selection
Consider stroke, shut height, and operation type when selecting components. Full contact pre-load is recommended for high-speed, short-stroke dies, while full disengagement suits long strokes. Lubricate assemblies every 8-hour shift with lightweight spindle oil.
Ball-Bearing Retainers
Made from heat-treated aluminum alloy, retainers are inspected for quality and are interchangeable with other manufacturers' products. Ball bearings are of AAA1 Grade and staked for security.
Ball-Bearing Sleeve Bushings – Pressed Fit
These bushings are made from chrome alloy steel, hardened for durability, and do not require select fitting. Boring instructions minimize bushing close-in.
Ball-Bearing Bushings – Tap Fit
Demountable shoulder bushings offer easy assembly and disassembly, secured with clamps and screws.
Ball-Bearing Guide Posts – Pressed Fit
Available in various sizes, these guide posts ensure precise alignment and durability, suitable for high-speed operations and interchangeable with other systems.
Overview
The document details specifications and guidelines for Lamina's precision guide posts and ball-bearing assemblies, emphasizing protection against wear and smooth operation.
Specifications
Guide posts are available in various sizes with specific dimensions for diameter and length, ensuring interchangeability and consistent preload. Part numbers and dimensions are listed.
Ball-Bearing Guide Posts
Available in pressed fit and tap fit designs, these guide posts offer easy installation and maintenance, with tap fit posts allowing easy assembly and disassembly.
Ball-Bearing Retainers
Designed to hold ball bearings securely while allowing free movement, these retainers are compatible with other manufacturers' components.
Ball-Bearing Sleeve Bushings
Made from vacuum degassed chrome alloy steel, these bushings are ground to exact tolerance limits and aid in alignment.
Ball-Bearing Bushings – Demountable
These bushings offer easy assembly and disassembly, designed to be wring fit into the die shoe with clamps and screws for secure installation.
Ball-Bearing Guide Posts – Metric
Available in various sizes, these guide posts are made from hardened chrome alloy steel and precision ground, available in lengths up to 500mm.
Replacement Kits and Clamps
Details on replacement kits for clamps and screws are provided, including part numbers and the number of kits needed for different pin diameters.
Ball-Bearing Boring Procedures
Procedures for boring precision dies include grinding die shoe plates parallel within specified tolerances and chamfering holes in die shoes.
Specifications and Procedures
1. Clean plates thoroughly before starting.
2. Clamp upper and lower shoes together and mount in the boring machine.
3. Sweep and strip the top surface of the plate in the boring machine. Shim as required to achieve a "0" indicator reading of specified T.I.R. All bores should be square to plate surfaces within the specified T.I.R.
4. Step bore in line with hole patterns to dimensions shown on the chart. Ensure all bores are square to plate surfaces within the specified T.I.R.
5. Chamfer both ends of the bore.
Interchangeability and Modifications
Lamina ball-bearing guide pins, bushings, and retainers are fully interchangeable, eliminating the need for select fitting. No modifications are required if mounting and boring instructions are followed carefully.
Bore Size Chart
The document provides a detailed bore size chart for ball-bearing bushings and pins, specifying nominal guide pin diameters and corresponding bore sizes for different fits.
Ball-Bearing Component Installation Instructions
- Minimum Shut Height: Determines maximum guide post length and maximum bushing height to prevent post bottoming on bolster at minimum shut height.
- Maximum Shut Height: Added to the stroke equals the maximum open height, indicating the minimum engagement for the guide post in the required bushing. Ideal minimum engagement is at least 3/4".
- If required strokes are longer than normal, the guide post and retainer may be disengaged from the bushing on upward travel under specific conditions.
- The bushing must always be engaged by the guide post a minimum of 3/4" if the operation is inclined or speed surpasses 150 strokes per minute.
General Information
1. The ball-bearing retainer travels half the distance the pin travels or one-half the stroke length.
2. Maximum post length equals minimum shut height minus 1/4".
3. Maximum straight sleeve length equals minimum shut height minus punch holder thickness minus 1/4".
4. Maximum retainer length equals bushing length minus 1/2".
Post slot lengths are available upon request.
Overall, the document provides detailed specifications and procedures for the installation and maintenance of ball-bearing components, emphasizing the importance of precise measurements and adherence to guidelines to ensure optimal performance.

4 Lamina ball-bearing retainers (AR1) are made of a heat-treated aluminum alloy that combines lightness and strength. Each retainer is quality inspected for dimensional tolerance and all burrs are removed prior to ball insertion. Ball bearings are of the highest quality AAA1 Grade (25 millionth class), continually inspected to meet our exacting tolerance. After the ball bearings have been inserted into the retainer, they are then staked using Lamina’s unique method that allows free movement with maximum security. After staking, the retainers are then scrubbed to remove all metal particles that...
