ADM690 Functions: 4.65 V Reset, Battery Switchover, Watchdog Timer, Power Fail Input

Product catalog summary
Overview: The ADM690–ADM695 series are microprocessor supervisory circuits designed for power supply monitoring and battery control, suitable for microprocessor systems, computers, controllers, intelligent instruments, and automotive systems.
Features: Key features include low power consumption (5 mW), precision voltage monitoring, reset assertion down to 1 V VCC, low switch on-resistance, high current drive (100 mA), automatic battery backup power switching, a watchdog timer with adjustable periods, and fast gating of chip enable signals.
Specifications: These circuits operate within a VCC range of 4.75 to 5.5 V and a VBATT range of 2.0 to 4.25 V. They offer a reset voltage threshold of 4.65 V and a reset timeout delay of 50 ms or 200 ms. The watchdog timeout period can be set to 100 ms, 1.6 s, or adjusted externally.
Applications: Ideal for microprocessor systems, these circuits provide functions such as µP reset, backup battery switchover, watchdog timer, CMOS RAM write protection, and power failure warning.
Functional Description: The ADM690–ADM695 family includes power-on reset output, battery backup switching, reset pulse generation, and power fail warning. Models like ADM691, ADM693, and ADM695 offer additional features such as write protection and adjustable reset and watchdog timeout periods.
Battery Switchover: The battery switchover circuit connects VOUT to the higher of VCC or VBATT, using an internal PMOS transistor switch with a typical on-resistance of 1.5 Ω, capable of supplying up to 100 mA.
Ordering Information: Detailed ordering guide with temperature ranges and package options is provided for each model in the series.
ESD Sensitivity: Devices are ESD sensitive, and precautions are recommended to avoid performance degradation or loss of functionality.
Power Fail Reset Output: The RESET output activates when VCC falls below the reset threshold, ensuring the microprocessor is held in a stable shutdown condition. The reset active time is adjustable on certain models.
Watchdog Timer: Monitors microprocessor activity to prevent stalling, generating a RESET pulse if the Watchdog Input (WDI) is not toggled within the timeout period.
CE Gating and RAM Write Protection: ADM691/ADM693/ADM695 include circuitry to protect memory integrity by preventing write operations when VCC is invalid.
Power Fail Warning Comparator: Provides early warning of power supply failure, allowing the microprocessor to execute shutdown procedures before power is lost.
Application Information: Guidance on increasing drive current, using rechargeable batteries, adding hysteresis to the power fail comparator, and monitoring battery status is included.
Figures and Tables: Various figures illustrate power fail reset timing, watchdog timeout periods, and chip enable gating. Table I provides reset pulse width and watchdog timeout selections.
Watchdog Timer Configuration: Describes configuration using the ADM69x series, with internal timeout settings and requirements for toggling the watchdog input.
Backup Battery Replacement: Discusses managing voltage on the VBATT pin during battery replacement to prevent spurious resets.
Typical Applications: Used in power monitoring and battery backup applications, with VOUT powering CMOS RAM and switching during power failures.
Power Fail Detector: Monitors power supply and generates a power fail output signal if voltage drops below 1.3 V.
RAM Write Protection: CEOUT line prevents erroneous data writing to RAM during power fluctuations.
Outline Dimensions: Provides detailed dimensions for various package types of the ADM69x series.

POWER FAIL RESET OUTPUT Watchdog Timer RESET RESET is an active low output which provides a RESET signalto the Microprocessor whenever V The watchdog timer circuit monitors the activity of the micro-processor in order to check that it is not stalled in an indefiniteloop. An output line on the processor is used to toggle theWatchdog Input (WDI) line. If this line is not toggled within the selected timeout period, a > CC is at an invalid level. WhenV > CC falls below the reset threshold, the RESET output is forcedlow. The nominal reset voltage threshold is 4.65 V (ADM690/ ADM691/ADM694/ADM695)...
