AD5174: Single-Channel, 1024-Position, Digital Rheostat with SPI interface and 50-TP Memory

Product catalog summary
Overview: The AD5174 is a single-channel, 1024-position digital rheostat with an SPI interface and 50-times programmable memory, designed by Analog Devices. It is suitable for applications such as mechanical rheostat replacements, variable gain control in op-amps, and programmable filters.
Specifications: The device operates with a nominal resistance of 10 kΩ and a temperature coefficient of 35 ppm/°C. It supports single-supply (2.7 V to 5.5 V) and dual-supply (±2.5 V to ±2.75 V) operations. It features a 10-bit resolution with resistor integral nonlinearity (R-INL) and differential nonlinearity (R-DNL) within ±1 LSB.
Interface and Memory: The AD5174 uses an SPI-compatible interface for controlling wiper settings and memory readback. It allows unlimited adjustments before programming the resistance value into the 50-TP memory, which does not require an external voltage supply for fuse blow.
Performance Characteristics: The device has a bandwidth of 700 kHz, total harmonic distortion of -90 dB, and a resistor noise density of 13 nV/√Hz at 10 kHz. The power supply rejection ratio ranges from -50 to -55 dB.
Package and Thermal Management: Available in 10-lead LFCSP and MSOP packages, the AD5174 operates over a temperature range of -40°C to +125°C. The thermal resistance is 50°C/W for the LFCSP package and 135°C/W for the MSOP package.
Applications: Ideal for mechanical rheostat replacements, variable gain control in op-amps, programmable voltage-to-current conversions, programmable filters, delays, time constants, programmable power supplies, and sensor calibration.
Theory of Operation: The device operates within a terminal voltage range of VSS < VTERM < VDD. The RDAC register determines the wiper position, programmable via an SPI interface, and can be stored in a 50-TP memory register.
Serial Data Interface: The AD5174 includes a serial interface compatible with SPI standards, allowing data writing to every register with a 16-bit shift register controlling operations.
RDAC Register: This register controls the wiper position, allowing unlimited changes and programmed by loading the serial data input register with the desired position data.
50-TP Memory Block: Allows programming of the wiper position up to 50 times, consuming approximately 4 mA for 55 ms and taking about 350 ms to complete.
Write Protection: At power-up, write commands are disabled. The RDAC register can be refreshed from the 50-TP memory using a software reset.
Read Operation: The SDO pin allows readback of the RDAC register or 50-TP memory contents.
Shutdown Mode: The device can enter a zero-power-consumption state by executing a shutdown command.
RDAC Architecture: Uses a patented three-stage segmentation architecture for optimal performance with a transmission gate CMOS topology.
Programming the Variable Resistor: The nominal resistance between terminals is 10 kΩ, with 1024-tap points accessed by the wiper terminal.
Procedures: Details on calculating actual end-to-end resistance using resistance tolerance stored in the internal memory.
Hardware Setup: An external 1 μF capacitor must be connected to the EXT_CAP pin for proper operation.
Operating Range: Defined by the positive VDD and negative VSS power supplies, with signals exceeding these limits clamped by internal diodes.
Power-Up Sequence: Recommended sequence is VSS, GND, VDD, followed by digital inputs, VA, and VW.
Package Dimensions: Provides detailed dimensions for the 10-Lead Frame Chip Scale Package (LFCSP_WD) and the 10-Lead Mini Small Outline Package (MSOP).
Ordering Information: Models include AD5174BRMZ-10 and AD5174BCPZ-10-RL7, both with a resistance of 10 kΩ, 1,024 resolution, and a temperature range of -40°C to +125°C.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The AD5174 is a single-channel, 1024-position digital rheostat that combines industry leading variable resistor performance with nonvolatile memory (NVM) in a compact package. This device supports both dual-supply operation at ±2.5 V to ±2.75 V and single-supply operation at 2.7 V to 5.5 V and offers 50-times programmable (50-TP) memory. The AD5174 device wiper settings are controllable through the SPI digital interface. Unlimited adjustments are allowed before programming the resistance value into the 50-TP memory. The AD5174 does not require any external voltage supply to facili-tate fuse blow and there are 50 opportunities for permanent programming. During 50-TP activation, a permanent blow fuse command freezes the resistance position (analogous to placing epoxy on a mechanical rheostat). The AD5174 is available in a 3 mm × 3mm 10-lead LFCSP package and in a 10-lead MSOP package. The part is guaranteed to operate over the extended industrial temperature range of -40°C to +125°C.
