Optimize Production of Milk Protein Concentrate (MPC65 to MPC85)

Optimize Production of Milk Protein Concentrate (MPC65 to MPC85)

Product catalog summary
Introduction
Cream is separated from raw milk to produce skim milk, which is low in fat and high in protein and lactose. This skim milk is concentrated to create milk protein concentrate (MPC), with varying protein levels such as MPC65 and MPC70. These concentrates are dried and used in food products to enhance protein content. Production managers oversee the process to ensure products meet specifications and optimize constituent levels to avoid rework.

Challenge
Traditional sample analysis involves delays due to lab testing, leading to potential production of off-specification products. This can result in increased start-up times and production inefficiencies.

Solution
The ProSpect In-line Process NIR provides real-time analysis of protein and total solids in MPCs, offering immediate feedback for process control. It outputs results for all constituents, including lactose and fat, enhancing production efficiency.

Analysis Statistics
  • Total Solids: Range 15.6 - 19.3%, SECV 0.24%, R2 0.9291
  • Protein: Range 10.9 - 14.6%, SECV 0.11%, R2 0.9591
  • Lactose: Range 0.5 - 4.4%, SECV 0.09%, R2 0.9925
  • Fat: Range 0.2 - 0.5%, SECV 0.02%, R2 0.8842

Benefit
The ProSpect system allows for real-time, in-line analysis, enabling better process control and reducing product waste. It ensures protein levels remain within specification, offering a rapid return on investment and sustained profitability.

System Features
The ProSpect system includes a built-in process computer with a touch screen, PLC for communication with plant systems, power conditioning, temperature control, and is housed in a NEMA 4X enclosure. It is designed to be vibration insensitive, Ethernet ready, and includes self-diagnostics. The system is compliant with 3A standards for CIP measurement flow cells.

Optimize Production of Milk Protein Concentrate (MPC65 to MPC85)-1

APPLICATION NOTE OPTIMIZE PRODUCTION OF MILK PROTEIN CONCENTRATE (MPC65 TO MPC85) In-line analysis of milk protein concentrates for control of total solids and protein levels Introduction Cream used in the production of butter and other higher fat product is separated from raw milk. Skim milk is the resulting product, which is very low in fat (<0.05%) and high in protein and lactose. This skim milk is concentrated to produce milk protein concentrate (MPC). Subsequently protein is concentrated to a certain ratio to total solids in various levels/products i.e., MPC65 = milk protein concentrate containing 65% protein on dry basis (PDB). Several varieties of MPC are produced i.e., MPC70 (70% protein on dry basis), MPC80…etc. These products are then dried and sold/distributed as a powder. They are used in various food and dairy drink products to fortify the protein. ProSpect real time in-line analysis The production manager is responsible for the overall production and sets procedures for the operators to control the process ensuring the products are within specification. The desire is to optimize the levels of constituents in the product to avoid rework or giving away product. Challenge Typically, samples are collected and taken to a central or satellite lab for analysis. This can take some time, especially during the solids building phase resulting longer start-up time and possible off-specification product being produced for longer than desired. While waiting for results, production may be stopped/put in recirculation or continued and risking making off-spec product.
