Stator and Rotor Mounting
STK armatures and rotors can be optionally shipped mounted on a centering and positioning flange to simplify the mounting and centering process inside the stator.
Operation in Natural Convection
The armature is a source of current losses and hysteretic and eddy current losses. Key considerations include:
  • Permanent torques are specified for a copper temperature rise of 120°C with armatures in contact with ambient air or integrated with a metallic part in contact with ambient air.
  • The motor housing should be fixed on a metallic flange with an area at least twice its section.
  • Avoid enclosed environments or consult for motor derating if necessary.
  • Ensure materials near the motor can withstand high temperatures or consult for motor derating.
Fluid Cooling
Fluid cooling is recommended to avoid overheating and achieve higher continuous torques than natural convection. Two operating points are characterized:

Use glycoled softened water or approved fluids for closed cooling circuits to minimize corrosion and deposits.
Drives and Associated Position Sensors
ALXION STK frameless motors are designed to minimize torque harmonics with sinusoidal wave drives. They are compatible with various brushless drives. Recommended features for maximizing servo performance include:
  • Digital current loop with programmable or self-adaptive gains.
  • Built-in anti-resonant programmable filters on speed error to maintain high servo gains with high load inertia.
Phases Commutation
Permanent magnet synchronous motors require constant phase alignment between armature and rotor fields for torque control. Resolvers and absolute encoders allow this phasing, unlike incremental encoders or scales. Specific encoder ranges for brushless motors include:
  • Three-phase commutation rectangular signals for TTL encoders.
  • Sine wave signals for sin/cos encoders, with frequency multiplied by motor pole pairs.
Various Positioning Sensor Interfaces
Drives can be compatible with several positioning interfaces:
  • Resolver: Limited accuracy, suitable for applications with hollow shafts up to 90 mm.
  • TTL Encoder or Optical Scale: Limited cpr, best resolution with optical scales.
  • Sin/Cos Encoder or Scale: Widely used, allows high resolution with drive interfaces.
  • Absolute Encoders: Provide characteristics of TTL or Sin-Cos encoders without starting sequence for phase commutation.
