Trace Moisture Measurement in Welding - GTAW & MIG-1

Application Note Trace Moisture Measurement in Welding - GTAW & MIG GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) & MIG (Metal Inert Gas Welding) Suitable Products Portable Hygrometers MIG welding is a process in which an electric arc forms between a continuously fed, consumable wire electrode and the work piece metal, causing both to melt and fuse together. The shield gas is delivered through the welding torch to protect the weld area from atmospheric contamination. MIG welding is more easily automated than TIG welding and is commonly used in applications where the welds are less critical, such as the production of consumer durable goods. As a result, it is less common for MIG welding operators to need to validate the moisture content of the shield gas at the torch head. However, if required, this can be done by disabling the electrode feed and following the same procedure used for TIG welding. Measuring moisture in MIG welding is essential as excessive moisture in the welding wire or shield gas can break down into hydrogen and oxygen during welding, leading to porosity, cracking and other weld defects. Moisture can also cause other welding defects, such as spatter and uneven weld beads. Measuring moisture in MIG welding minimises the risk of defects to ensure the quality and integrity of the weld.
